Sturgeon Spearing Report Day 8
16 February 2020 Sports
DNR Senior Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs writes:
Today marks the half way point of the 2020 sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago System. Today’s harvest of 40 fish from Lake Winnebago brings the season total to 219 sturgeon through the first 8 days. The 38 fish registered from the Upriver Lakes today bring the season total to 234 for that fishery. We’ve been confident all season that the Lake Winnebago fishery will go the full 16 days, but I’m now confident saying that the Upriver Lakes season will go 16 days as well. This will be only the 2nd time the Upriver Lakes fishery went the full 16 days since the limited entry format was implemented in 2007.
The registration station at Jim and Linda’s (Calumet Harbor) regained the title of busiest registration station on Lake Winnebago today as they registered 14 fish. Payne’s Point was next with 7 fish registered and Wendt’s was 3rd with 6 fish. A more detailed breakdown of where fish were registered today is available through the following link:
The largest fish of the day was 116.6 pounds, 77.9 inches and registered at Jerry’s Bar (Oshkosh) by Brian Koplitz (pictured). Brian’s fish was one of only two fish registered today that was 100 pounds or larger. The largest fish from the Upriver Lakes was 77.7 pounds, 64.7 inches and registered at Critter’s by Fuller Braun.
It’s been a couple of good days for the Meier family. Yesterday David Meier Jr. registered a 131.4 pound fish at Waverly Beach. David’s dad says that his son typically gets his fish first and then he spears one shortly after. Well today was David Meier Sr.’s day as he and another member of their spearing group, Renee Reszel, registered fish at Waverly Beach. David Meier Sr.’s fish was 38.3 pounds, 56.7 inches and Renee’s fish was 105.4 pounds, 73.7 inches. This was Renee’s first fish of her career. What a way to break into the club of successful spearers! Congratulations to this spearing group and let’s see if they can keep it going tomorrow!
