Pro Football Hall of Fame safety Willie Wood, who played for the Packers from

1960-71, passed away Monday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Wood was 83.

Unheralded coming out of Southern California in 1960, Wood sent postcards to several NFL teams asking for a tryout. He ended up signing with the Packers as a rookie free agent and started at free safety on five NFL championship teams. An Associated Press All-Pro five straight years from 1964-68, he also was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times, was named to the NFL’s 1960s All-Decade Team and was one of two safeties chosen on the Super Bowl Silver Anniversary Team in 1990.

Wood broke open a close contest in the third quarter of Super Bowl I, intercepting a Len Dawson pass and returning it 50 yards to the Kansas City Chiefs’ 5. An author of 48 career interceptions, Wood won the NFL title in 1962 with nine thefts. A gifted returner, he also led the league in punt returns in 1961 with a 16.1-yard average. He was one of only 16 undrafted free agents to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Wood played college football in the one-platoon era and doubled as a quarterback and defensive back.

NBA-Milwaukee is at New Orleans. The Bucks have the best record in the league at 42-7 and lead Toronto by 6 ½ games in the Eastern Conference. The Pelicans are 20-30 in the Western Conference.

The Wisconsin Herds Jalen Adams has been named the NBA G League Player of the Month for January. Adams becomes second Herd player to win Player of the Month honors this season. Prior to being named Player of the Month, Adams was named Player of the Week for games played from Jan. 20-26. Rayjon Tucker received the award in December. Adams and Tucker are the first pair of teammates to win the award in back-to-back months since the 2016-17 NBA G League season.

Wisconsin Herd head coach Chase Buford is named Coach of the Month for January in the Wisconsin G League, becoming the first coach in franchise history to win the award. Buford led the Herd to an 8-2 record, which served as the best mark in

the league. Wisconsin was a perfect 5-0 on the road and the team collected four

victories over teams with winning records. In addition, the Herd won four games by

double figures and outscored its opponents by 65 points. For the month, Wisconsin

was the only team to record averages of 120 points and 50 rebounds, and the Herd

held its opponents to 41.9% shooting, which was the second-best percentage during

the month.
