18 February 2020 Sports

Denny Hamlin won his second straight Daytona 500 and third overall, beating Ryan Blaney in an overtime photo finish marred by a terrifying crash that sent Ryan Newman to the hospital on Monday. Newman had surged into the lead on the final lap when Blaney’s bumper caught the back of his Ford and sent Newman hard right into the wall. His car flipped, rolled, was hit on the driver’s side by another car, and finally skidded across the finish line engulfed in flames. It took several minutes for his car to be rolled back onto its wheels. He was placed in a waiting ambulance and taken directly to a hospital. His condition was reported as serious but non-life threatening.

Hamlin is the first driver since Sterling Marlin in 1995 to win consecutive Daytona 500s, but his celebration in victory lane was subdued. This victory came after just the second rain postponement in 62 years, a visit from President Donald Trump, a pair of red flag stoppages and two overtimes. The 0.014 margin of victory was the second closest in race history, and Hamlin’s win over Martin Truex Jr. in 2016 was the closest finish in race history. That margin of victory was 0.01 seconds. The win in “The Great American Race” is the third for Toyota, all won by Hamlin. Gibbs has four Daytona 500 victories as an owner.

In college men’s basketball tonight, Purdue plays at Wisconsin. The Boilermakers come into the game at 14-12 while the Badgers are 15-10. Wisconsin has won two straight and is 8-6 in the Big Ten while Purdue is 7-8. Tipoff is at 6:00.

Kari Bernier is the 22nd member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. The announcement was made Monday at Lambeau Field. Bernier, of Dyersburg, Tennessee, was chosen from among 10 finalists. Packers officials said 60,000 votes were cast. Bernier’s name will be permanently enshrined in the Packers Hall of Fame at Lambeau Field. She will also receive four club seats to a 2020 home game, a Packers Pro Shop gift certificate, a road trip for two to a 2020 road game and a subscription to Packers Plus.

The rest of the finalists were:

  • Dr. Gordon Dammann, Lena, Ill.
  • Jeff Gasser, Coleman
  • Kathy Fermanich, New London
  • Leo DeGroot, West Bend
  • Carole Gutowski, Green Bay
  • Bob Pinzl, Waukesha
  • Mark Ames, Spruce, Mich.
  • Bill Hughes, Coeur D’Alene, Idaho
  • Roger Cassem, Midlothian, Va.
  • Sturgeon spearers nabbed 30 fish on the Lake Winnebago system Monday, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
  • Day 10 of the 16-day season saw 23 fish speared on Lake Winnebago and seven more on upriver lakes Butte des Morts, Winneconne and Poygan. Stockbridge Harbor was the busiest registration station, with seven sturgeon coming in.
  • The largest sturgeon of the day was speared on Lake Winnebago, a 93.1-pound, 70.8-inch fish registered by Lucas Muche at Wendt’s on the Lake in Van Dyne. The upriver lakes’ largest fish was 53.3 pounds and 61 inches long. It was registered by Alice Suttner at Critter’s Wolf River Sports in Winneconne.
  • The season ends Sunday, unless harvest caps are reached sooner. Upriver lakes spearers are 22 adult females away from the 90% trigger, which would end spearing the following day. Lake Winnebago spearing numbers are not near any harvest caps.
