Update On Oshkosh Ransomware Virus
The computer virus that disabled the City of Oshkosh computer system was apparently from a group of Russian hackers. The city is continuing to recover all of its data, which is taking longer than expected. State and federal investigators have traced the ransomware virus back to a group based in Russia. Oshkosh Communications Coordinator Emily Springstroh says the virus was detected during the early morning hours of January 28th. She estimates the city has restored between fifty and seventy-five percent of its computers. Both Oshkosh and Racine have recently been hit by ransomware attacks.
Stabbing In FDL
A 39-year-old Fond du Lac man is facing charges for a stabbing incident Monday night in the 100 block of Mary’s Avenue. According to police a 34-year-old woman called authorities saying the man was threatening her with a knife and fighting with another man. Both victims escaped the residence and locked themselves in a vehicle parked in the driveway until police arrived and arrested the suspect. The suspect is facing a number of charges including second- degree recklessly endangering safety
Sex Offender Release In Oshkosh
A 37-year-old sex offender is being released from prison and will be living at 1105A Jefferson Street in Oshkosh starting next Tuesday. Samuel Petrusch was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child in Winnebago County in 2006. His victim was a 15-year-old girl he knew. Petrusch will be under the supervision of probation and parole until July 27th. He will also be on electronic monitoring.
Voters Will Turn Out For Supreme Court Race
Fond du Lac County voters won’t have much to vote on during next Tuesday’s primary election. Still County Clerk Lisa Freiberg says she expects voters will turn out at the polls to reduce the field of candidates for the State Supreme Court race from three to two. “Fond du Lac County we tend to be a little bit higher than the state average which is good and maybe sometimes its people getting out of their homes. I always hope for a nice sunny warm day in February for people to get out and go and exercise their right to vote.” The three candidates running for State Supreme Court are current Justice Daniel Kelly, Dane County Circuit Court Judge Jill Karofsky, and Marquette Law School Professor Ed Fallone.
Flood Planning
Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken is urging residents to build a plan on how to respond during a flood event. The plan should include how to communicate with family and friends as well as where you will go if you have to evacuate. If you do not plan on evacuating, ensure you have supplies to sustain everyone in your home for several days. She also encourages people to get flood insurance. Hicken notes the county experienced several flooding events in 2019 and there is the potential for more this year.
Ribbon Cutting For New Unit At Winnebago Mental Health Institute
The new admissions unit at Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh has been opened. State Department of Health Services Secretary-designee Andrea Palmer says it will provide a dedicated space to address the immediate needs of a new patient. The new unit is part of a series of investments being implemented this year across the state’s mental health services system. A small ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to officially open the new unit.
Congressman Grothman Schedules Town Hall Meetings
Congressman Glenn Grothman will be holding town hall meetings in three locations next week. All three are on Friday, February 21st. The first is that morning from 9 to 10 am at the Fredonia Village Hall, the second from 11 am to Noon at the Adell Village Hall. The final meeting is that afternoon from 3 to 4 pm at the Howards Grove Village Hall. Congressman Grothman represents the 6th Congressional District.
