Thin Ice Danger

Winnebago County Sheriff’s officials say a pickup truck went through the ice near Willow Island on Lake Winneconne Wednesday morning. The man who was in it was able to get out and called the Sheriff’s office around 6:35 am. The Sheriff’s Office posted a list on their Facebook page of mishaps involving thin ice on Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan, and Lake Winneconne since last Friday. The list included three pickup trucks, a snowmobile and an ATV that have gone through thin ice on those lakes. They caution that the ice is unpredictable and say if you are not sure whether it’s safe don’t risk it.

Good Turnout Expected At The Polls In April

Fond du Lac County Clerk Lisa Freiberg is anticipating a strong turnout for the April Presidential Preference Primary in the county. She points out that the county’s voter turnout is usually a little higher than the average in Wisconsin. Four years ago about 40 percent of registered voters turned out especially with Republicans narrowing down their list of candidates for President. She says this time its Democrats that are narrowing their choices for that office. “I still feel that there is going to be a good turnout in the April election maybe even a little bit higher because this time it is more of a Democratic preference race so I am anticipating a good, good turnout.” In addition voters in April will be voting on races for school boards, county, city, town, and village elected officials.

Better Equipped For Ice Rescues

A $5,000 donation from the Peter Zacherl Memorial Fund is allowing the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department to carry ice and water rescue kits in their patrol vehicles this winter. Zacherl died a year ago last month after a four-wheeler he was on went through the ice of Lake Winnebago. Deputies got out to him, but couldn’t do enough to save him. Sheriff’s Captain Bill Tadych says they hope the equipment will help them prevent a similar tragedy. “The family has generously reached out and donated the funds to equip us with those things we talked about; ice picks, rope, PFDs for each squad, a travel bag that we can easily carry from the squad and gear up and if we have to do a rescue we are much more prepared.” Peter Zacherl was one of the owners and directors of the Zacherl Funeral Home in Fond du Lac.
