Engagement Session On Ripon Schools Referendum Tonight

The Ripon Area School District’s Board of Education will be holding four community engagement sessions about an operational referendum that will go before voters in November. The first session is tonight from 6 to 7:30 in the Community Room of the High School. Other sessions will be February 12th and March 2nd and 30th at the same time and place. District Superintendent Mary Whitrock says district voters have passed two previous operational referendums over the past 12 years. She talks about the current referendum. “It was a half million dollars to support updated curriculum, technology, performing maintenance and replacing vehicles and that has been a critical part of our overall budget for the school system because of some of the cuts that we’ve faced and all districts have faced over time.” She says public input is critical in developing the referendum question.  The election is on November 3rd.

Setting Priorities

State Senate Minority Leader Jennifer Shilling says the Governor’s State of the State Address last month was about setting priorities for the next budget session. She says education, affordable health care, and good roads are among them. She says neither political party got everything they wanted in the last budget. “The budget was a down payment on many of his priorities he didn’t get everything he wanted. Republicans didn’t get everything they wanted and moving forward it kind of sets the road map for again the governor’s priorities going into the next budget.” She says ultimately it is about listening to priorities of voters.

Landscaping Change Could Cut Down Crime At Wayside

Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt is hoping a simple change in landscaping will cut down on criminal activity at an Interstate 41 wayside in the northeastern corner of the county. Sheriff’s Sergeant Joseph Nicholas brought him the idea about removing visual impediments like brush and overgrown trees so the wayside would be more visible from the interstate. Over the years the wayside has seen drug activity, illegal sexual activity, and physical assaults. The project took the authorization of the state and cooperation of the county highway department to make possible. It’s part of the Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Initiative.

Pneumonia Vaccine

The public health officer for the Fond du Lac County Health Department says depending on your age you may want to ask about getting a pneumonia vaccine when you get your flu shot. Kim Mueller says usually your physician makes the call on when you’ve reached the age for that to be of benefit to you. But she says unlike influenza vaccine you can get the shot for pneumonia any time of the year.  “When influenza is circulating in our community that they would need to then start thinking about pneumonia vaccine, but really pneumonia vaccine can be given at any time it isn’t time related.” If you’d like to know more consult your physician or call the health department at (920) 929-3085.
