State Representative Joan Ballweg joined Governor Tony Evers last week as he signed the first of nine proposals from the Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention into law. Ballweg chaired the task force. She says when they held a public hearing in Ripon they focused on student and youth suicide, and they heard a lot about the importance of having a healthy, positive and supportive environment within our schools. She says the bill will provide funding for programs that train students to recognize the warning signs of suicide and improve school culture to reduce stigma.

Sturgeon Season The Good Old Days

DNR Senior Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs says these are “The Good Old Days” when it comes to the sturgeon spearing season and the sturgeon population. Koenigs says there are an abundance of sturgeon and good-sized fish at that in the Lake Winnebago System. “You probably have more big fish in the population now fish over 100 pounds than what we’ve had since we started keeping track of the harvest and maybe since the late 1800’s when harvest started to be an issue for Lake Sturgeon population throughout the Midwest.” Koenigs notes that the majority of the largest fish that have been harvested in the system have been taken since 2010. He says their length and weight records for harvested sturgeon go back to 1941.

Ice Safety Tips

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Bill Tadych says the ice is never safe on Lake Winnebago, but particularly this winter. He says usually it will support vehicles that go out on it for the sturgeon spearing season providing people know their way around the lake, but not this year. He says it’s always good to carry a few safety tools with you in case you do go through the ice. “There’s a lot of float coats or personal flotation devices out there that you wear at all times. Have a throwable with you and carry rope, ice picks with you, always carry your cell phone keep it in a sealed zip-lock container and a GPS is always important as well.” He says you should never go out on the ice alone, but if you do let someone know where you are going to be. The sturgeon spearing season began this past Saturday on Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes.
