Tracking COVID-19
The Public Health Officer for Fond du Lac County says health officials are doing their best to track and minimize the spread of the new Coronavirus known as COVID-19. Kim Mueller says that includes screening people coming into the country and making sure they monitor those suspected of having the virus. Mueller says as of Wednesday 16 people in Wisconsin were suspected of having the virus with 1 positive case, 14 testing negative, and 1 still pending. Across the U.S. 15 people have tested positive for COVID-19.
Tips On Missing Mayville Man Don’t Pan Out
A 77-year-old Mayville man is still missing, but a Silver Alert and publicity about his disappearance generated a couple of tips. Mayville Police say they received two tips Tuesday from residents who had seen John Bachhuber walking south on State Highway 67 near Dunn Road between 11 pm Saturday night and 12:20 Sunday morning. A coordinated search of the area was done by Police and the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department, but turned up nothing. The search included vehicle and foot patrol, an unmanned drone, K-9 teams, and phone notification to residents within a 5-mile radius. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency.
Cassie Nygren Sentenced
The daughter of State Representative John Nygren of Marinette has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and 17years of extended supervision for the drug overdose death of a pregnant woman and on other charges. Thirty-one-year-old Cassie Nygren was sentenced Thursday in Brown County court. She and her ex-boyfriend, Shawn Gray, sold heroin laced with fentanyl to Jennifer Skeen of Allouez in 2017. Skeen was eight months pregnant at the time. Nygren gave a tearful apology during yesterday’s sentencing, which lasted nearly four hours.
Prescription Drug Price Task Force Meets In Oshkosh
The Governor’s Task Force on Reducing Prescription Drug Prices met in Oshkosh Wednesday to understand and discuss how insurers and employers are managing increasing prescription drug costs, including the role pharmacy benefit managers have in that process. The meeting included presentations from Wisconsin businesses and health benefit cooperatives as well as associations representing PBMs and insurers. The session marked the task force’s third monthly meeting since it first launched last November.
State Senate Passes Feyen Opportunity Zone Bill
The State Senate this week passed a bill authored by Senator Dan Feyen of Fond du Lac that encourages Wisconsin investors to keep their dollars in the State by participating in Opportunity Zones. Under the bill a taxpayer can decrease the amount of capital gains subject to state income and franchise taxation when investing in an opportunity zone in Wisconsin. Feyen says the legislation will accelerate economic growth and job creation across the board. Wisconsin has 120 Opportunity Zones including zone’s in Fond du Lac and Oshkosh, which Feyen represents as part of the 18th State Senate District.
Congressman Grothman Town Hall Meetings Today
Congressman Glenn Grothman will be holding town hall meetings in three locations today. The first is this morning from 9 to 10 am at the Fredonia Village Hall, the second from 11 am to Noon at the Adell Village Hall. The final meeting is this afternoon from 3 to 4 pm at the Howards Grove Village Hall. Congressman Grothman represents the 6th Congressional District.
Chamber Social
An individual and business were honored during the Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Social Wednesday. It was held at Mr. and Mrs. P’s Eatery in Ripon. Chamber Executive Director Jason Mansmith says former Ripon Commonwealth Press Publisher Tim Lyke was honored with an Outstanding Service Award for his contributions to the Chamber over the years. Also Mr. and Mrs. P’s Eatery was honored with the Business of the Year Award. Mansmith says they were really supportive of the Chamber during Dickens of a Christmas hosting Breakfast with Santa and they’ve been tremendously supportive of the chamber since joining it. The Social was also a chance to highlight the Chamber’s past year’s activities.
Read Off Celebration
The Oshkosh Public Library wraps up its Wild Winter Read Off for kids with a celebration at the library from 9 am to Noon Saturday. Sandy Toland is the Community Engagement Librarian at the Oshkosh Public Library. The Read Off was for kids from preschool through 5th grade. Toland says they are pleased to have award-winning author Lisa Detlefsen coming to the celebration. She says Detlefsen will be in the Children’s Room from 10 to 11 am and will be available to adult authors in the First Floor Reading Room at 1 pm. Other activities will include cookie decorating, a sensory “cranberry marsh”, a Do-it-Yourself photo booth, and more.
