Wisconsin redshirt sophomore Kobe King announced on Instagram his decision to leave the Badgers basketball program.

“After talking with my family and friends I have decided that the best step for my future basketball aspirations, as well as my love for the game, is to immediately step away from the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball program,” King wrote. “This has been a very tough decision for me…however, after spending almost three years in the Wisconsin program I have realized that this program is not the right fit for me as a player and person.”

King did not travel with the team to Iowa City earlier this week. His announcement comes following Wisconsin’s 68-62 loss to Iowa. Wisconsin led by as much as 12 points in the second half of that game.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported King “was frustrated with the direction of the team.” King was second on the team in scoring this season at 10 points per game.

The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs continue to get ready for Super Bowl 54 Sunday in Miami. The Chiefs have gotten behind in their two playoff games but have managed to come back. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he would like his offense to get off to a better start but if it doesn’t, said his team won’t panic. The 49ers have run the football 75 percent of the time in their two playoff wins. Coach Kyle Shanahan said his team’s offense is dictated by the opposition’s defense.

Marquette’s Markus Howard reached a career milestone with his 2,500th point before suffering a head injury Wednesday night, but Sacar Anim scored a career-high 28 points as the Golden Eagles rallied for an 84-82, double-overtime victory over Xavier. Howard became the 72nd player in NCAA history to score 2,500 career points. He’s 14 points away from his brother Jordan, who had 2,524 at Central Arkansas from 2015-18.

Marquette’s shooting star went to the locker room for a medical exam after getting hit in the head with 11:15 left in regulation. He finished with 18 points.

The Golden Eagles (15-6, 5-4 Big East) pulled it out behind Anim and Koby McEwen, who scored 17 straight points for Marquette after Howard left the game. McEwen finished with 18.   It was the second straight overtime game on the road for Marquette, which lost at No. 13 Butler 89-85 on Saturday.

Quentin Goodin scored 19 points for Xavier (13-8, 2-6 Big East). Tyrique Jones had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

The Green Bay Packers have hired their vacant defensive backs coaching position according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Tom Silverstein reported Tuesday morning, the Packers have hired former Minnesota Vikings secondary coach Jerry Gray. Gray replaces Jason Simmons who left to take the same job for the Carolina Panthers on Saturday. Gray spent the last six years with the Vikings and has been a defensive coordinator with the Tennessee Titans (2011-13) and the Buffalo Bills (2001-05).

The Chicago Cubs are taking two more low-risk fliers on a pair of players hoping to rebound from injuries, reaching one-year deals with reliever Jeremy Jeffress and outfielder Steven Souza Jr.

Jeffress’ contract is worth $850,000, and the 32-year-old right-hander can earn an additional $200,000 in incentives. A person with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed the deal on condition of anonymity because the move had not been announced. Souza finalized a $1 million contract that includes the possibility of $2 million in incentives based on plate appearances and days on the active roster.

Vanessa Bryant spoke publicly Wednesday for the first time since the helicopter crash that killed her husband Kobe Bryant, one of their daughters and seven others, taking to Instagram to thank people for the global outpouring of support since the tragedy. She also announced the formation of a fund to help support the other families that were affected by the crash.
