Oshkosh School Board Mulls Referendum

Oshkosh School District voters could be asked to approve a $24.5 million referendum in April. The school board discussed the referendum last night. During a previous meeting the district’s Facilities Advisory Committee recommended a long-term consolidation effort. It would combine the district’s 20 schools into 14 and upgrade building security. Money from the referendum would cover those costs and replace roof sections and update electrical systems. A decision on whether to place the referendum on the spring ballot will be made by next Thursday.

Ramp Closures Announced

The state DOT says there will be ramp closures from 9 am to 2 pm today for the southbound I-41 on ramp from State Highway 96 in Outagamie County and the eastbound U.S. Highway 10 ramp to northbound I-41 in Winnebago County. The closure in Outagamie County is to repair a storm sewer pipe and the closure in Winnebago County is to fix a beamguard. Drivers should use adjacent interchanges to access I-41.

Social Security Scam

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers posing as Social Security Administration agents. The phone calls and robo-calls are an effort to get your personal information and money. The caller will say that your Social Security numbers have been linked to criminal activity and will be suspended. They then ask for your numbers so they can reissue or reactivate the numbers for a fee. Officials say the Social Security Administration would not do that, but it is a ploy to get personal information and money out of you.

There will be no opposition for those running for seats on the Ripon Common Council this spring. Incumbent John Splitt is running for reelection to a District 1 seat. Benjamin Morrison is running for the two years left on the District 2 seat Alderman Joel Becker resigned from. No one is running for a four-year term for the other District 2 seat. David Gallops is running unopposed for a District 3 seat and Jolene Schatzinger is unopposed for a District 4 seat.

New Airpacks Purchased For Ripon Area Fire District Firefighters

Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul says the purchase of new airpacks for their firefighters isn’t just improving their safety. He says they’ve had their old airpacks for 18 years and they only had a life expectancy of 15 years. The purchase of the new airpacks has also boosted morale. “I will tell you it has been a big morale booster too, but to have the one piece of equipment that our life depends on that piece of equipment. So we just got 32 new pair of packs at a cost of about $182,000.” Saul says the new airpacks come with a new set of standards so they will train with the airpacks over the next few weeks before they are put into service. The cost of the new airpacks was included in the department’s capital improvement budget requests.

Vapers Should Quit Too

The Tobacco Prevention and Control Coordinator for the Fond du Lac County Health Department is urging those who vape to quit as well. Sandy Bernier says tobacco smokers aren’t the only ones who get nicotine and cancer causing agents from smoking like activities. She notes a long-term study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine last month confirmed there is a risk factor for respiratory disease for those who vape. “We know now that there’s more concern about the liquid nicotine, again it may not have 65 cancer causing agents, but it is very addictive and we’ve had some real issues with some people with some severe lung issues.” Bernier says if you go to the Tobacco Free Living website they have links to more information and websites that will help you quit and you can also call the Wisconsin Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or 1-800-784-8669.
