Sentencing Today For Poynette Man On Fifth Drunken Driving Conviction

A 62-year-old Poynette man will be sentenced in Dodge County court this afternoon for his fifth drunken driving offense. Last week a jury found Charles Hawley guilty of that charge. Earlier this month he had pleaded no contest to operating while revoked for the same traffic stop in the Town of Elba last April. A third charge of failing to have an ignition interlock device installed in his vehicle was dismissed on a prosecutor’s motion.

Giving To Australian Relief Efforts

An official with the state’s Better Business Bureau chapter recommends doing your homework before giving to a charity connected with relief efforts for the Australian Wildfires. Susan Bach says people feel sympathy when they hear about the more than 18 million acres destroyed by fires and over a billion animals and birds. She says your money can be put to good use if it is going to a legitimate charity.  “You can start with the Wise Giving Alliance and that website is just give.org. So if you have a particular charity in mind you can type that name into the search field to see how reputable it is.” She says the Better Business Bureau also has vetted a number of charities you can check out at their website. Bach does say you need to be careful about crowdfunding, which usually has good intentions but doesn’t always work out so she recommends researching those efforts first.

Ripon Family Restaurant Fundraiser For RAFD Today

The Ripon Family Restaurant is holding a fundraiser for the Ripon Area Fire District today. Fire Chief Tim Saul says there are a lot of things firefighters need to do their job that isn’t included in their budget. He says fundraisers help to pick up those costs. Today from 6 am to 8 pm the Ripon Family Restaurant is holding a fundraiser for the department. Saul says the owner goes above and beyond the call of duty. “The Ripon Family Restaurant the owner goes above and beyond and he donates his profits for the day to the fire department. He really does a lot for us and again those things go to non-budgeted items that help the department.” Saul says members of the fire department will be doing some wait staff duties like refilling coffees and sodas. There will be free hand-outs too.

Benefits Of Volunteering

There are several benefits to volunteering your time to a non-profit or serving on a board or committee. Ripon Area United Way Board of Directors President Jeff Puhlmann-Becker says some people give because they feel it is the right thing to do and it makes them feel good and benefits those they are giving their time or money to. Former Ripon Commonwealth Express Publisher Tim Lyke wrote an opinion piece about volunteering. He says it also gives you a purpose. “It really is a pleasure to serve. When you give of yourself you fill yourself with a sense of purpose and mission and vitality I guess that you don’t otherwise have, you have to give of yourself.” Puhlmann-Becker says volunteering is also an excellent way to help a non-profit or agency if you can’t afford a monetary donation.
