Emergency Detention Bill
Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt says a bill making its way through the state legislature could make the way they handle emergency detentions more efficient. Whenever a law enforcement agency is faced with a so-called Chapter 51it involves having a person evaluated by a mental health facility. Transports for such an evaluation can take up to ten hours of an officer’s time. A bill passed by the State Assembly last month would allow private transport companies to handle emergency detentions. The bill could be on the Governor’s desk by February.
Destination Zero Pathway To Care
Comprehensive Service Integration of Fond du Lac County’s Destination Zero program recently released a tool that will allow businesses and groups to more easily navigate resources available to those with mental health and other issues. Tammi Kohlman is Destination Zero Coordinator. Destination Zero is a program getting help early for people contemplating suicide. She says the Pathways to Care tool has information about available resources and how to contact them. “There were businesses and groups of people in the community that wanted to be able to help other people when they were struggling, but ultimately they just didn’t know what to do.” She says while their goal is to help those contemplating suicide the tool also has information about resources for other issues like homelessness and domestic violence. The first printing of a pamphlet was 10,000 copies. Copies can be orders at the CSI website, which also has an online copy. Those who would like to know more can also call Kohlman at (920) 906-6527.
United Way Supports Literacy Efforts
Literacy is one of the efforts the Ripon Area United Way supports through its funding. United Way Board of Directors President Jeff Puhlmann Becker says teaching children to read through programs like the Imagination Library isn’t the only way of improving literacy. He points out sometimes a person doesn’t read properly because of developmental issues like dyslexia where numbers and letter, and symbols get jumbled around. “And it isn’t only a matter of maybe someone doesn’t have the background where they read to as a child words or were exposed to lots of vocabulary, but sometimes people suffer with dyslexia the words blend together.” If properly diagnosed a person with dyslexia can improve their reading skills. To make a contribution to the United Way campaign send them to P.O. Box 71 in Ripon, 54971 or go to their Facebook page or website.
Chamber Dollar Gift Certificates Sell Well In December
Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Mansmith says December was a brisk month for the sales of Chamber Dollar gift certificates. He says they are a good gift any time of year, but sell best leading up to the Christmas holiday. “About 15 percent of all of all of our Chamber Dollar gift certificates probably occur during the month of December. So anywhere between $45,000 to $60,000 a year in those Chamber sales and that is all money that stays locally here in the community.” He says they are good for a year and unlike some gift certificates do not decrease in value over time.
