The Packers are coming off a 20-15 home win against the Washington Redskins on Sunday. The victory moves Green Bay to 10-3. Up next on Sunday is a rematch with the Bears at Lambeau Field. The Packers won the opening game of the season 10-3 in Chicago which has won three straight and improved to 7-6. Coach Matt LaFleur said he hasn’t gotten down to prepping for the game but says the Bears are on a roll.
Meanwhile, the Packers have activated tackle Jared Veldheer from the exempt/commissioner permission list and released guard/tackle Adam Pankey. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transactions Monday.
In Monday Night Football, the Eagles won at home in overtime over the Giants, 23-17. Philadelphia improves to 6-7 in the NFC East, tied with the Dallas Cowboys for first place.
Giannis Antetokounmpo had 32 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to their 15th straight victory, 110-101 over the Orlando Magic on Monday night. Khris Middleton scored 20 points for Milwaukee and Dante DiVincenzo added 12 points off the bench. Evan Fournier had 26 points for the Magic, who had won four straight. Terrence Ross scored 23. Ross hit a 3-pointer and was fouled by Eric Bledsoe with 50 seconds left to cut the Bucks’ lead to 107-101, but he missed the free throw. Then Middleton put away the game by responding with a 3-pointer. The Bucks had their first two shots of the game swatted away by Magic forward Jonathan Isaac, the league’s leading shot blocker. In all, Isaac recorded four blocks against four different players before the game was 8 1/2 minutes old. The Bucks surged to a 31-18 lead after a 14-0 run late in the first quarter, with forward Ersan Ilyasova sinking two 3-pointers. They led 52-40 at halftime. Orlando shot just 29.5% from the field, including 14.3% from behind the 3-point line, in the first half. The Magic, fueled by six 3-pointers in the third quarter, including three by Ross, drew within five points just before the end of the period. The Bucks host the Pelicans on Wednesday.
Former Brewer Ted Simmons, an eight-time All Star was elected to the Hall by a veterans committee after falling one vote short two years ago. Simmons received 13 of 16 votes when the modern era committee gathered Sunday ahead of the winter meetings. Also elected was Marvin Miller, the union leader who revolutionized baseball by empowering players to negotiate multimillion-dollar contracts and to play for teams of their own choosing. Primarily a catcher in a 21-year big league career, the switch-hitter batted .285 with 248 homers and 1,389 RBIs for St. Louis (1968-80), Milwaukee (1981-85) and Atlanta (1986-88). He will be inducted into Cooperstown during ceremonies on July 26 along with any players chosen next month by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America from a ballot headed by former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.
Oklahoma’s overtime win in the Big 12 championship game on Saturday has put the Sooners in the CFP semifinals as the No. 4 seed. That’s the good news. The bad news is that their semifinal opponent will be Heisman Trophy candidate Joe Burrow and the 13-0 LSU Tigers.
The Tigers climbed over Ohio State for the top seed with their impressive 37-10 win over Georgia in the SEC title game. The Buckeyes dropped to second after turning a 21-7 halftime deficit into a 34-21 victory against Wisconsin in the Big 12 championship game.
Ohio State’s semifinal game will be against No. 3 Clemson, which stormed to a 62-17 win over Virginia in the ACC title game. The Tigers have a 28-game winning streak as they seek their third CFP crown in four years.
LSU and Oklahoma will meet in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 28, the same day Ohio State and Clemson clash in the Fiesta Bowl.
In other notable bowl matchups:
– On Jan. 1, Oregon will take on Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl will have Baylor against Georgia, Minnesota will face Auburn in the Outback Bowl and Alabama clashes with Alabama in the Citrus Bowl
