Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 35 points to lift the Bucks to their 13th consecutive victory, 127-103 over the Pistons on Wednesday night. The last time the Bucks had a longer winning streak than this was when they won 16 in a row spanning the end of the 1972-73 season and the beginning of 1973-74. They also had a 13-game run shortly after that 16-game streak ended.
Milwaukee won all eight matchups with the Pistons last season — four in the regular season and four in the first round of the playoffs. The Bucks also beat Detroit last month in their first meeting of 2019-20.
There were six technical fouls in this game, and there were words exchanged during a couple mild altercations. The first involved Antetokounmpo and Blake Griffin after those two collided around midcourt in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Antetokounmpo fell to the ground after being fouled, and then Griffin stepped over him. Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton came over to confront Griffin. Three technicals were assessed after that. The Bucks went on a 13-2 run late in the second quarter to lead 57-39, and although Detroit closed within 11 at the half, the Pistons never made a major run during the final two quarters. Antetokounmpo scored 12 points in the third, and Milwaukee led 92-72 after three. Andre Drummond had 23 points and 14 rebounds for Detroit. Middleton had 17 points for the Bucks. The Bucks host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.
The Packers were back on the practice field on Wednesday getting ready for Sunday’s home game against the (3-9) Washington Redskins. With four games remaining, the (9-3) Packers are currently the no. 3 seed in the NFC behind the New Orleans Saints and the Seattle Seahawks who respectively sit in the no. 1 and no. 2 spots. A win on Sunday by the Packers and Matt LaFleur would break a franchise record for wins by a first-year head coach. LaFleur tied former Packers head coaches Mike Holmgren and Mike Sherman with nine wins in their first season. A playoff berth would be even bigger for LaFleur. No Packers first year head coach has ever made the playoffs.
The Packers defense will face two good running backs in veteran Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice, two physical runners that will pound the ball. Coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday that the defense must be gap-sound and set the edges in order to be effective against them. On the offensive side, receiver Davante Adams said the Packers offense has spread it around and there’s room for a lot of players to be effective.
Sunday’s game starts at noon from Lambeau Field. You can hear all of the action, beginning with the pregame at 10:00 on 102.3, The Bug.
All-Pro guard Josh Sitton will retire with the Green Bay Packers. The Packers organization made the announcement Wednesday. Sitton was drafted by the Packers in the fourth round in 2008. He went on to start 125 games for Green Bay. While no official plans have been announced, Sitton will possibly be back in Titletown this weekend. His friend and former offensive lineman T.J. Lang posted a tweet on Wednesday saying he’s excited to be back at Lambeau this weekend. While he wore the green and gold, Sitton was voted into four Pro Bowls and made the All-Pro team three seasons in a row, from 2013 to 2015. He blocked for an offense that ranked in the top 10 in points and yards in multiple seasons. The Packers cut Sitton (and his large salary cap) on cutdown day in 2016. He was picked up by the Bears and played for Chicago for the next two years. He was signed by the Miami Dolphins in 2018 but was injured in the season opener and missed the rest of the season. Sitton announced his retirement from the NFL last April.
In Thursday Night Football, Dallas plays at Chicago. Both teams are 6-6. The Cowboys are first in the NFC East, a game ahead of Philadelphia while the Bears are in third in the NFC North.
Sacar Anim had 19 points as Marquette, minus the nation’s leading scorer Markus Howard, beat Jacksonville 75-56 on Wednesday night.Theo John had 11 points for Marquette (6-2), which earned its fourth straight home victory, and Jamal Cain added 12 rebounds. The school announced before the game that Howard, who is averaging 26 points a game, was in concussion protocol. Destin Barnes had 12 points for the Dolphins (4-6), who were held to 29.5% shooting and were outrebounded by 13. Bryce Workman added 10 points and Kevin Norman had seven rebounds.
