13 December 2019 Sports

The Packers continue to get ready for the Bears on Sunday at Lambeau Field. Green Bay’s defense will be looking to stop Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who not only has thrown three touchdowns in each of his last two games, but has also started to run the football more, something he did with a lot of success last year. Linebacker Preston Smith said he has a lot of mobility. Meanwhile, coach Matt LaFleur says the weather, which is expected to be in the mid-teens, should be favorable to Aaron Rodgers and company. The Bears, 7-6 and winners of their last three games, still entertain slight playoff hopes, while the Packers, 10-3, are currently the number two seed in the NFC. The game be heard, beginning with the pregame at 10:00 and the kickoff at noon, on 102.3, The Bug.

In Thursday Night Football, Baltimore routed the New York Jets at home, 42-21. Lamar Jackson threw five touchdown passes and set a new single-season quarterback rushing record, becoming the first quarterback to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season. Baltimore improves to 12-2 while the Jets fall to 5-9. The Ravens clinched their second straight NFC North title.

Two modern day Green Bay Packers legends are receiving another career honor. Brett Favre and Jordy Nelson will be inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame. QB Favre and WR Nelson will be inducted as part of the 70th Anniversary Class. The ceremony is June 5, 2020, in Madison. The Packers fan favorites will be joining a Hall of Fame that includes Hank Aaron, Oscar Robertson, Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr and Bonnie Blair. Favre helped return the Lombardi Trophy to its rightful home in Super Bowl XXXI. No. 4 won three-straight NFL MVP Awards. Favre is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. His No. 4 was retired by the Packers. WR Jordy Nelson holds a Packers record for most receiving yards in a season with 1,519 in 2014. He is third in team history in receptions with 550 and second in team history with touchdown receptions with 69. Nelson retired as a Green Bay Packer in 2019.

Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor has won the 2019 Doak Walker Award, which he also won in 2018. This award is given to the nation’s best running back. He currently leads the country in touchdowns with 26.

Wisconsin’s Tyler Biadasz has made history after he won the Rimington Trophy, which goes to the nation’s most outstanding center. No previous Badger had won the award before Biadasz. He is the 21st recipient of the award overall. The trophy is named after Nebraska All-American and college Hall of Famer Dave Rimington.

The Milwaukee Brewers agreed to a one-year contract for $5,125,000 with pitcher Corey Knebel, who is returning from Tommy John surgery. Knebel is a 28-year-old right-hander. He hurt his elbow during spring training and had surgery April 3. He had been eligible for salary arbitration and will have the same salary as in 2019. His deal includes a $50,000 bonus for comeback player of the year along with other award bonuses. Knebel had 39 saves in 2017, when he was an All-Star, and 16 the following season.
