A New Type Of Weather Warning Snow Squalls
There is a new tool in the National Weather Service’s tool box for winter. Fond du Lac County Communications and Emergency Management Director Bobbi Hicken says in addition to winter storm warnings and advisories there will be snow squall warnings. She notes it is not about the amount of snow or the longevity, but rather the way a squall will impact driving conditions and visibility. “It’s when those really small areas that get an amount of snow that isn’t really anything that is going to be inches or anything like that but it is going to affect visibility, it is going to affect driving.” She says a snow squall warning will be short in duration probably a half hour to hour, but it should be taken just as seriously as a tornado warning or severe thunderstorm warning when it comes to driving decisions.
Working Smoke And Carbon Monoxide Detectors Important
Ripon Area Fire District Chief Tim Saul stresses the importance of having working carbon monoxide and smoke detectors especially during the heating season. He says they’ve had too many close calls over the years with dangerous carbon monoxide levels in homes. “Every year since I’ve been here we’ve had numerous close calls it is not uncommon and I think back probably two years ago we almost lost a family of seven to carbon monoxide and it was because they didn’t have a carbon monoxide detector.” He says they are glad to test anyone’s home if they suspect they may have high natural gas or carbon monoxide levels. He says you should place carbon monoxide detectors in your sleeping areas because carbon monoxide is odorless and is known as the ‘silent killer.’
