School Bus Versus Garbage Truck

No children were on a school bus that collided with a garbage truck in Washington County’s Village of Richfield Monday morning. Sheriff’s officials say the crash happened at the intersection of Hillside and Hubertus Roads. The garbage truck ended up on its side and the driver was trapped inside. That driver was extricated by the Richfield Fire Department and suffered only minor injuries. Investigators determined the garbage truck driver did not see a stop sign on Hillside Road due to fog and failed to yield to the school bus.
Columbia County High Speed Chase
A driver fleeing from authorities in Columbia County early Sunday morning kept on going after a tire deflation device damaged the tires on the suspect’s vehicle. The State Patrol put out the spike strip on Highway 33 near Portage, but the driver made it to Highway 78 in the Town of Caledonia before become bogged down in a cornfield. The driver then fled on foot, but surrendered when a K-9 unit was brought into the cornfield. Two others inside the vehicle were also arrested. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Department says the three were fleeing from a traffic stop in Lake Delton.
State Highway 67Project In FDL County Delayed
The State’s Department of Transportation tells us the State Highway 67 improvement project in the Campbellsport area will be carried over to next year. Crews couldn’t complete the project because of record rainfall and early snow. The remaining three to four weeks of work on the 5.6 mile project will be carried over to 2020. The stretch of State Highway 67 being improved is from Baumann Street in Campbellsport to the Dodge/Fond du Lac County line. There will be no traffic impacts on State Highway 67 during the winter.
Kohler Company Layoffs
The Kohler Company recently informed the state it is cutting as many as 90 jobs as it prepares to move its engine production from its Sheboygan County location to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The company informed the state last Friday. It is still trying to place those workers in other jobs at its location, but is having a difficult time due to housing and other sectors of the economy slowing down. The gas-powered engine production assembly line will be relocated to Mississippi on January 12th.
Gun Deer License Sales Were Down Last Year
A DNR Conservation Warden says the number of licenses sold for the 9-day gun-deer hunt has been trending downward for the past few seasons. Bill Hankee referred to the change in sales from the past season. “There has been a gradual decline looking here at the 2017 and 2018 numbers, looks like there was total of 20,000 less license sales.” On the other hand there has been an increase in sales for crossbow licenses. Deer hunters should have plenty of targets during the season with state’s Deer herd population estimated at 1.8 million deer. The gun-deer season starts this Saturday, November 23rd and runs through Sunday, December 1st.
State Patrol Open House In FDL Tonight
The State Patrol will hold an open house at its Fond du Lac Post this evening to showcase opportunities for careers with the State Patrol. It’s from 3 to 6 pm. Troopers and Inspectors, a K-9 officer and drone pilot will be available during the open house. The State Patrol is currently accepting applications from people interested in serving as a trooper or inspector. Applications are available online and the deadline for returning them is January 12th. The Fond du Lac Post is located at 851 South Rolling Meadows Drive in Fond du Lac.
Ripon Wine Walk Success
Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jason Mansmith says they are still astounded by the number of tickets sold and the amount of people that showed up for the Holiday Wine Walk on November 1st. They had very few no shows. “Let me give you the number on this okay? 565 tickets sold, six no shows…six. Yeah pretty big, pretty big event.” He says there was also a waiting list of 50 to 60 other people hoping to get tickets. The next Wine Walk in downtown Ripon is scheduled for April 17th.
