Good Samaritan Saves Two Lives In FDL
Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue is crediting a Good Samaritan with saving the lives of two people in the city Thursday morning. Division Chief Troy Haase says the woman was driving in the 300 block of East Merrill when she saw men lying on the sidewalk. She stopped and called 9-1-1. When Fond du Lac paramedics arrived they treated both for drug overdose and hypothermia. Both were unconscious when they were taken to St. Agnes Hospital for further treatment. The incident happened just before 5:30 Thursday morning.
Oshkosh Contractor Bound Over For Trial
A 76-year-old Oshkosh Contractor waived his preliminary hearing Thursday and was bound over for trial on a felony theft charge. Jerome Wagner allegedly was paid nearly $74,000 by Stadler Machine for its new building, but instead of paying the money to another firm for work on the building used it to pay off previous projects. According to the criminal complaint he was forced to sell his home on Lake Winnebago and auction off personal property to pay Stadler back. He will be arraigned on December 11th.
Former Smith Elementary School Sold
The Oshkosh Area School Board Wednesday approved the sale of the former Smith Elementary School. Invista Analytics, a real estate analytics firm, put in the only bid of $400,000 for the 124-year-old school. Two previous bids, one for more, were rejected because they didn’t meet bid requirements. District Spokeswoman Katie Nieman says board members appreciate the firm’s commitment to preserving the historic integrity of the property. The 32,690 square foot building sits on 2.32 acres of land. The district closed the school in June.
Unemployment Rates For October
The state’s Department of Workforce Development says unemployment rates last month decreased or stayed the same in 68 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties last month. According to federal labor statistics Dodge and Fond du Lac counties had a 2.5 percent jobless rate. Winnebago County’s rate was 2.6, Marquette’s was 2.7, Green Lake and Waupaca counties rates were at 2.8 percent, and Waushara County had an unemployment rate of 3.2 percent. The cities of Fond du Lac and Oshkosh both had jobless rates of 2.7 percent for October.

Deer Hunting Safety Tips
A Conservation Warden with the state’s Department of Natural Resources urges deer hunters this gun-deer season to make safety a priority. Bill Hankee says dress accordingly outfitted in blaze orange or pink. Make sure your preparations are complete. Know the meaning of the acronym TABK. “Treat every firearm as if it loaded, Always point the muzzle in a safe direction, Be sure of your target and beyond, and Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you’re ready to shoot. Some of those basic rules that keep a lot of people safe.” He also recommends being sure of your footing if you are working your way out to your blind or returning from it in the dark. A bow hunter in Fond du Lac County accidentally got impaled on an arrow after tripping in the dark.
Chicago Tribune Mentions Dickens Event
Ripon’s Dickens of a Christmas got a little free promotion thanks to the Chicago Tribune. The online article came out Tuesday about holiday season events in the Midwest. The 29th Annual Dickens of a Christmas is December 6th through the 8th. A link to information about the event was included in the article, which also mentioned events for Old World Wisconsin in Eagle and the Santa Cruise in Lake Geneva. Other events in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan and Missouri were also mentioned.

Fundraiser For The Waushara County Animal Center
Beginning Saturday people can purchase ornaments on a special Christmas tree to benefit the efforts of the Waushara County Animal Center. At 2:30 tomorrow afternoon members of the Blazing Stars 4-H Club will be hanging the ornaments on a tree at Pioneer Floral and Greenhouses in Wautoma. All ornaments will be sold through December 31st for a dollar a piece. Proceeds will help the Animal Center with costs for sheltering, vet care, and fostering and placement for stray and lost animals.
