FDL Man Dies During Traffic Crash On State Highway 23

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials have released the name of the 83-year-old Fond du Lac man that died during a traffic accident on State Highway 23 at Townline Road Monday afternoon. Denis Schmitz was heading west on Highway 23 when his pick-up truck crossed over the centerline and went into the ditch. The truck continued through a field coming to rest against a vehicle parked in a private driveway on Townline Road. Schmitz was found unresponsive in the truck. First responders attempted life-saving efforts, but they were unsuccessful and he died at the scene. Speed and alcohol weren’t factors. Investigators believe his death was from a medical condition.  It’s the county’s eighth traffic-related fatality this year compared to 16 in 2018.

An 83-year-old Fond du Lac man was found dead in his pick-up truck after it ran off State Highway 23 in the Town of Fond du Lac Monday afternoon. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s officials say it came to rest up against another vehicle in a private driveway on Townline Road.  “The investigation showed that a westbound pick-up truck had crossed over the centerline crossing the eastbound lane and subsequently entered the south ditch of State Highway 23. The truck then continued traveling west through a field before coming to rest against a vehicle parked in a private driveway on Townline Road.” The driver was found unresponsive. First responders attempted life-saving efforts, but they were unsuccessful and the man died at the scene. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash. It is believed a medical condition contributed to the crash.
