Deer Harvest Totals Down For Opening Weekend
27 November 2019 News
Deer hunters harvested nearly 33,000 less deer over the opening weekend of gun-deer season compared to the start for the 2018 season. A total of 90,286 deer were taken compared to 123,090 last year. DNR big game ecologist Kevin Wallenfang says in 2018 the season had the earliest possible start followed by the latest this season. He says they saw similar fall offs in harvest totals when a similar start occurred in the 2007-08 and 2012-13 seasons. Locally 1, 846 deer were taken in Columbia County, 1,141 in Dodge, 1,109 in Fond du Lac, 1,091 in Green Lake, 1,979 in Marquette, 2,939 in Waupaca, 1,789 in Waushara, and 411 deer were killed in Winnebago County. Of the more than 90,000 deer harvested last weekend; 46,866 of them were bucks and 43,420 were antlerless. Harvest numbers were down in part due to less rutting activity given the lateness of the season.
