With Sunday’s 34-24 victory at Dallas, the Packers go into Monday night’s matchup 4-1, while the Lions are coming off their bye week and are 2-1-1.  Coach Matt LaFleur said on Monday that the game is critical because if the Packers win, they would be 3-0 in the NFC North.   He said the practice schedule would be changed a bit because of the Monday night game.

In the ALDS, the Yankees beat the Twins 5-1 to take their series 3-0 and advance to the ALCS.  Gleyber Torres had three hits and six pitchers combined to quiet the Twins and sweep their series.  New York will play either Houston or Tampa Bay.  The Rays pounded the Astros 10-3, but Houston still leads 2-1. The two teams play tonight in Tampa Bay.

In the NLDS, the Nationals evened their series with the Dodgers, winning 5-1 at home.  Max Scherzer allowed one run while striking out seven in seven innings. The two teams play game 5 Wednesday night in Los Angeles. The Cardinals also tied their series with the Braves, edging Atlanta 5-4 in St. Louis. Game five is Wednesday in Atlanta.

In Monday Night Football, San Francisco pounded Cleveland 31-3.  The 49ers are off to a 4-0 start while the Browns drop to 2-3.  The 49ers rushed for 275 yards.  Max Breida took the game’s opening snap and raced 83 yards untouched for a touchdown and would finish with 114 yards. Teammate Tevin Coleman rushed for 97 as the 49ers rushed for 185 yards alone in the first half.  Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns for San Francisco while the Browns Baker Mayfield threw for just 100 yards and was picked off twice.  The 49ers and the Patriots are the league’s only undefeated teams left after five weeks.

Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor was named the Big Ten’s offensive player of the week for his performance against Kent State on Saturday. He matched a single-game school record with five total touchdowns, becoming the first Badger to reach that mark since Melvin Gordon in 2014 and the first Big Ten standout with five touchdowns since Saquon Barkley in 2016.  Taylor carried the ball 19 times for 186 yards and four rushing touchdowns, moving into third place on Wisconsin’s all-time rushing list with 4,916 career yards.  He also added three catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.  It was the seventh time Taylor has earned the Offensive Player of the Week award and third of the season.
