The Green Bay Packers will travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs for Sunday Night Football. All indications coming into this week were the first-ever Patrick Mahomes vs. Aaron Rodgers showdown wouldn’t happen.
Then Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was limited in practice Wednesday, raising the possibility the reigning league MVP could return sooner than expected from a dislocated kneecap. Aaron Rodgers said Wednesday he would never count Mahomes out from playing on Sunday. Mahomes hurt the knee on a quarterback sneak Thursday night in Denver. The initial thought was that he could miss up to six weeks, but X-rays and an MRI exam returned the best possible result, and coach Andy Reid said that he has not been ruled out for Sunday night against Green Bay.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said his team will prepare for Mahomes after learning he had practiced Wednesday, but quickly added the entire Chiefs’ offense is explosive and they need to be prepared for that. He does admit however, that Mahomes is special, calling him a “rare talent.”
The Chiefs are preparing as if backup Matt Moore will be the starter, and they have elevated rookie Kyle Shurmur from the practice squad to serve as the potential backup.
Packers star receiver Davante Adams continued to miss practice on Wednesday but a return could be coming. Adams went through warm-ups with the team and did not appear in pain while running and jumping to begin practice. Adams officially did not practice but worked indoors with the medical staff doing rehab work. He has missed the past three games with a turf toe injury. Packers safety Darnell Savage was a full participant in practice. Savage returned after missing the last two games with a sprained ankle. The Packers-Chiefs game is on Sunday night at 7:20 p.m. on NBC.
Meanwhile Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Oakland Raiders in Week 7. In Green Bay’s 42-24 victory over the Raiders, Rodgers posted the maximum passer rating of 158.3, completing 25-of-31 for 429 yards with five TDs. He also rushed for a sixth touchdown.
It was Rodgers’ first perfect passer rating as well as the first in franchise history, and the fourth game for odgers with a rating of 150-plus in his career. It was also his 10th career 400-yard passing game (including playoffs) and the fifth time he has thrown five or more TD passes. This marks the 17th time in Rodgers’ career he’s been honored as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week, a franchise record.
In Thursday Night Football, Washington plays at Minnesota. The Redskins are 1-6 while the Vikings are 5-2, one game behind the Packers in the NFC North.
The Washington Nationals erupted for six runs in the top of the seventh inning last night on their way to a 12-3 victory over the Astros and a 2-0 lead in the World Series. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning as Anthony Rendon hit a two-run double for Washington but Alex Bregman tied it with a two-run homer in the bottom half for the host team. The scored remained tied until the seventh when the Nationals erupted. Kurt Suziki opened the inning with a home run and that opened the floodgates for the Nationals. Also homering for Washington was Adam Eaton in the 8th inning and Michael Taylor in the ninth. Asdrubal Cabrera drove in the three runs for Nationals. Stephen Strasburg went the first six innings and picked up the win to improve to 4-0 in the postseason. Justin Verlander started the seventh for Houston but was taken out after giving up two runs. Overall, he went six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and took the loss. Game three is Friday night in Washington.
