The Packers are back on the practice field today, getting ready for Sunday night’s game at Kansas City against the Chiefs. Green Bay is 6-1 while Kansas City is 5-2. The Chiefs are expected to be without the services of starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who dislocated a kneecap in last Thursday night’s win at Denver. The Packers will find out if wide receiver Davante can play this week. He suffered a turf toe injury against the Eagles in week four and has missed the last three games.
Meanwhile, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a finalist for the FedEx Air Player of the Week. Rodgers attained a perfect passer rating–158.3–in the Packers 42-24 win over the Raiders at Lambeau Field. The 158.3 passer rating is the highest mark for an NFL quarterback. Rodgers completed 25 of 31 passes (80.6 percent) for 429 yards and 5 touchdowns with no interceptions. If Rodgers wins, FedEx will donate $2,000 in his name to the USO. Packers running back Aaron Jones was named the FedEx Ground Player of the Week for his performance against the Cowboys in week five.
The Washington Nationals took game one of the World Series in Houston last night with a 5-4 victory over the Astros. Houston took a 2-0 lead in the first but Washington scored a run in the second on a Ryan Zimmerman homer to make it 2-1. The Nationals tied it up in the fourth and then took the lead for good with a three-run fifth. Left-fielder Juan Soto was 3-4 with a homer and double and drove in three for the Nationals. Max Scherzer went five innings, giving up two runs on five hits and picked up the win. Gerrit Cole gave up all five runs on eight hits over seven innings to take the loss. Game two is tonight in Houston as right-hander Stephen Strasburg starts for the Nationals against another righty, Justin Verlander for the Astros. First pitch is at 7:07 CDT.
Though Ohio State’s matchup with Wisconsin this week is no longer a showdown of unbeaten top-10 teams, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day says that doesn’t change a thing. The Badgers (6-1, 3-1 Big Ten) suffered a shocking 24-23 loss to Illinois last Saturday after being favored by more than 30 points. The setback dropped Wisconsin to No. 13 and took the shine off what would have been one the nation’s top games this week. Day said the Badgers’ loss doesn’t make them any less skilled and dangerous or make the matchup any less intriguing. And the No. 3 Buckeyes (7-0, 4-0) won’t be preparing any differently for a clash of the nation’s two best defenses.
Joe Namath has been named the NFL’s Top Character, the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback who guaranteed his three-touchdown underdog New York Jets would beat the mighty Baltimore Colts in the third Super Bowl, was a solid choice in balloting conducted by The Associated Press in conjunction with the league’s celebration of its 100th season. Namath earned 2,577 points in voting by a nationwide panel of 60 football historians and media who regularly cover the NFL. Namath easily outdistanced the late Al Davis, owner of the Raiders and a former coach and AFL commissioner. Each had 12 first-place votes, but Davis wound up 162 points behind Namath. Only Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre was on all 60 ballots. Favre finished fourth overall.
