Washington’s Juan Soto delivered a bases-loaded single against Josh Hader that scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Nationals rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in the NL wild-card game Tuesday night. After Hader loaded the bases by hitting one batter, walking another and allowing a bloop single, Soto took a 96 mph fastball to right, and the ball skipped under outfielder Trent Grisham’s glove. That error allowed one of the runs to cross the plate.
Stephen Strasburg threw three scoreless innings to earn the win in the first relief appearance of his major league career, regular season or playoffs. Daniel Hudson pitched the ninth for the save.
The Brewers had taken a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer by Yasmani Grandal. He connected after Trent Grisham walked to lead off the game. Eric Thames hit a solo shot in the second to give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead before the Nationals Trea Turner homered in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1. Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff went the first four innings, giving up one run on two hits. Brent Suter pitched a scoreless 5tth, giving up one hit and Drew Pomeranz pitched a scoreless 6th and 7th while giving up no hits and striking out two.
The Nationals advanced to face the NL West champion Dodgers in the best-of-five Division Series. Game 1 is Thursday in Los Angeles. In the American League Wild Card game tonight, Tampa Bay plays at Oakland.
The biggest question mark for the Green Bay Packers (3-1) coming into Sunday’s match-up against the Dallas Cowboys (3-1) on the road, is the availability of star receiver Davante Adams. Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur told the media on Monday, Adams is “day-to-day” after suffering a turf toe injury in the fourth quarter on Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday, Adams is “unlikely” to play on Sunday. After posting a career-high 180 receiving yards on Thursday, Adams was unable to play the majority of the fourth quarter. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Adams’ underwent an MRI and the injury is not believed to be serious. Rapoport added that if Adams was to miss time, it wouldn’t be much. With the Packers having nine days in-between games, the chances of Adams playing against the Cowboys improves.
The Packers return to the practice field today.
The Bucks held their Media Day Tuesday. Expectations for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks have never been higher. After leading the Bucks to a league-best 60 wins in the regular season and losing to the NBA champion Raptors in the Eastern Conference finals earlier this year, Antetokounmpo is putting his league MVP trophy on the shelf and focusing solely on taking Milwaukee to the next level.
Antetokounmpo, who is entering his seventh season with the Bucks, had the busiest offseason of this career, but along the way the league’s MVP said he also worked on his leadership skills and his game, specifically his jump shot. Antetokounmpo has spent time this offseason shooting with new teammate Kyle Korver, one of the best shooters in NBA history.
Other newcomers to Milwaukee this season include Dragan Bender, Wesley Matthews – who played his college ball at Marquette -, and Robin Lopez, who joins twin brother Brook. The most notable addition by general manager Jon Horst, last season’s Executive of the Year, was bringing in Giannis’ older brother, Thanasis.
