Dates For Special Election Moved
It looks like a special election for the 7th Congressional District in Wisconsin won’t happen now until next spring. A spokeswoman for the Governor’s Office Tuesday said state and federal law conflict over setting a primary election date. Officials are working it out, but she says it looks like a general election won’t happen until April or May. Governor Evers had originally ordered a December 30th primary election if needed with the special election on January 27th. Congressman Duffy resigned last month.
Vehicle Registration Fees Increase
The cost of registering your vehicle with the state went up at the beginning of the week. For the majority of people it increased by $10 to $85. Those who own light trucks will see a $25 increase to $100. Fees also increased for trailers and truck tractors. The cost of getting vehicle titles also increased $95 to $164.50. Hybrid vehicles will have to pay a $75 surcharge every year. The increases will help the state pay for future road projects.
Loan Forgiveness Idea Gets Let Support
Congressman Glenn Grothman says it is amazing some of the ideas that people come up with to spend the country’s money. A committee he sits on held a public hearing about forgiving the loans of federal employees. The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah says the government can’t spend money for a program when it doesn’t have the money. “We are so broke as a country and it amazes me again and again that Congressmen just find ways to spend more money.” Grothman says it would be great if they could forgive the loans of everyone that works for the federal government, but the country is broke and some Congressmen don’t get that.
Red Cross Depends On Volunteer Base
The American Red Cross runs on volunteer power. Justin Kern of the Red Cross says they have about 50 staff members across the state of Wisconsin. He says whether they are responding to a fire, disasters, educational programs they provide or services to military veterans and others they depend heavily on their volunteer base. “Kind of the amazing thing is that we have about 2,300 volunteers that will do the heart of the work including folks right there in Ripon, Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, the whole Fox Cities area.” Last month the Red Cross did door-to-door installation of free smoke alarms and home fire planning in Ripon.
