Suicide Prevention Recognition

The chairperson of the State Assembly Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention says recognition of those who might be at risk of taking their own life is one of their focuses. State Representative Joan Ballweg says when they held a public hearing in Marshfield they heard from farmers and veterans two groups at more risk. She says the UW-Extension and Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection are trying to do more. “How do you get the people that work with farmers to be those folks who recognize those signs and encourage folks to get help?” Law enforcement, first responders and veterans also present some challenges. The state lawmaker from Markesan says employee assistance programs and after-action reports can help identify those at risk, but it is difficult to get people who usually have the answers and provide the help to get help themselves.
