The 65-year-old Waupun man that hid a Waupun woman wanted for reckless homicide pleaded no contest to an amended charge of obstructing an officer. Steven Bierman entered the plea during a hearing in Dodge County court Tuesday. He was ordered to pay a $500 fine or serve 30 days in jail. Thirty-nine-year-old Cara Zech was wanted in connection with the overdose death of 23-year-old Steven Compton of Fond du Lac. Compton died of a drug overdose on July 28th of last year.  When police showed up at Bierman’s apartment in Waupun on February 5th at Zech’s request he didn’t answer the door. Waupun Officials Make Request Of Sump Pump Users

In the wake of heavy rains officials in Waupun are asking home owners not to have their sump pumps pump into the floor drain in their homes. Doing so contributes to overloading the sewer collection system, which causes sewer backups in homes. They are asking people to discharge the sump pumps outside of their homes, which will minimize the potential for sewer backups. The Waupun Utilities Wastewater Treatment Plant has had high flows with the large rainfall.

Two Ripon Police officers recently completed 40 hours of crisis intervention training. Sergeant Lindsey Michels and Officer Kaylee Haring will now be able to use that to train other Ripon Police officers. The training will help officers develop communications skills with people involved in a mental health crisis. Addressing and improving the training for officers in that area was one of the department’s major goals for the year. A grant from the Ripon Medical Center Foundation made the training possible.

Trade Wars And Tariffs

Congressman Glenn Grothman is hoping American businesses will have the patience as President Trump tries to work out differences over tariffs and trade agreements with other countries. He says it is particularly difficult with the trade war the U.S. seems to be engaged in with China, but he says China has been stealing the intellectual property of American businesses for years. “Finally we have somebody that is trying to get the Chinese to the table, I know it is a difficult thing for business right now but I would say the majority of businesses I have talked to are willing to go through this if we can eventually solve the underlying problems that have been there all along.” The federal lawmaker from Glenbeulah also feels an updated version of NAFTA or the MCA agreement with Canada and Mexico would benefit what the U.S. has had with both of those countries in the past. He also says the President is working on agreements with Japan.

Mollie B Tickets Going Fast

The event isn’t until next May, but tickets to see SqueezeBox featuring Mollie B and Ted Lange perform at the Clay Lamberton Elementary School in Berlin are on sale now. It’s a fundraiser for the Berlin Knights of Columbus Council #1547 on Sunday, May 17th. Tom Pionke is a Deputy Grand Knight and Dance Event Chairman. He says they were fortunate with the popularity of Mollie B to land on her permanent schedule, but they realized last year they needed to get an earlier start on tickets because they sold out so fast. The event raises funds for a number of charitable efforts the Knights contribute to. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, if they are still available. To purchase tickets in advance call Pionke at (920) 290-0984. Doors will open at 11:30 that morning with dancing from 1 to 5 pm. There will also be food and refreshments.
