Legislation Proposed By Suicide Prevention Task Force

State Representative Joan Ballweg of Markesan is hoping legislation suggested by the Assembly Speaker’s Task Force on Suicide Prevention will help alleviate the growing trend of suicides. Ballweg chaired the task force. She says they will be introducing nine proposals hoping to curb the suicide rate that increased by 30 percent over the past 15 years in the nation. One proposal would make more funding available to provide training to school support staff about mental health. “This is the folks who are tasked through our local CESAs to do the training for our support people in our school districts around the state.” Another school-based proposal would allow districts to print national hot line numbers and text numbers on student IDs, which could help those contemplating suicide.

Peculiar Princess Project

A Fond du Lac woman who turned her life around and started her own motivational speaking business is hoping to do the same for young girls. Arletta Allen this year launched the Peculiar Princess Project for girls of color that are from 13 to 18 years of age. She says growing up in Fond du Lac it was not as diverse as she would have liked it to be. Her goal is to mentor the girls to give them confidence to overcome obstacles they encounter. “My hope is to start some kind of club if you for girls of color who may feel that they don’t fit or feeling like they don’t have a place to help them build confidence, character and charisma through a self-discovery type format.” When Allen was a girl she was homeless, turned to prostitution to afford food, dropped out of school, and was a teenage mother.  She says at this point she is fundraising for the non-profit organization. Allen’s Motivational Speaking Business is called Authentically Arletta. Allen recently won a national award for self-sufficiency achievement.

The Fond du Lac School District has moved up the game for its high school football team to tonight because of expected rain Friday. After last week’s heavy rains Fruth Field was underwater. While waters have receded officials aren’t taking any chances with more rain on the way. It’s homecoming week for the Fond du Lac Cardinals who will host Oshkosh North tonight at 7 pm. The field is expected to be dry enough to play on. Some other homecoming activities were also rescheduled.
