Ripon Mayor Overturns Council Vote On Mitchell Gift
23 September 2019 News
Ripon Mayor Gary Will issued his first veto as Mayor Friday overturning the Common Council’s decision to use a nearly $485,000 donation from the Lloyd Mitchell estate for a new pavilion at Murray Park. The Council approved that donation by a 5 to 3 vote at its last meeting with support building for a proposed Grace and Lloyd Mitchell Plaza and S.D. Mitchell Cultural Center. Will said after the meeting that he was concerned how much stock the Council put in the Park and Recreation Committee recommendation for the new pavilion proposal. He said the vetting by the committee was supposed to be a first step and not the end-all-be-all. Will’s veto letter will be presented by the city clerk at tonight’s Common Council meeting. The meeting is at 7 pm at Ripon City Hall.
