Ripon High School science teacher Rachel Thorson has been chosen by the Knowles Teacher Initiative as a member of its 2019 Cohort of Teaching Fellows. She is one of 37 high school mathematics and science teachers from around the country to be awarded the fellowship. Rachel began teaching chemistry at Ripon High School during the 2018–2019 school year. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Biology from the UW- Stevens Point in 2015 and also earned a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from the UW- Madison in 2018. She says she chose teaching because she had teachers help her out and is doing her best to pay it forward. The Knowles Teaching Fellowship is an intensive and cohesive, five-year program that supports early-career, high school mathematics and science teachers. As a fellow she will have access to grants for expenses associated with purchasing classroom materials, engaging in professional development, and spearheading leadership activities and more.
