Ripon Common Council Fails To Override Mayor’s Veto

24 September 2019 News

The Ripon Common Council last night failed to override Mayor Gary Will’s veto of their recent action to approve using the Lloyd Mitchell gift to finance construction of a new pavilion at Murray Park. The 5 to 3 vote was similar to the vote that originally approved using the more than $484,000 for the pavilion, but the Council need a two-thirds vote or 6 votes from the 8 alderpersons to override the veto. Will explained his veto to a packed audience in the Council Chambers saying he would have vetoed either the pavilion proposal or the other for a plaza and cultural center because he was waiting for more information to be shared with the council. Specifically the Council learned from City Administrator Lori Rich last evening that the city may be able to do multiple projects like the pavilion, a senior center, and razing the American House by combining funding sources such as the Mitchell gift and grants from closing a city revolving loan fund, federal monies, and county revolving loan fund closing money. Alderperson James Werch felt there were a lot of unknowns with combining those funding sources, but they have the Mitchell gift now and could still be doing the pavilion project. Even though the Council failed to override the veto the issue of using the Mitchell gift could still be brought back before the Council at their next meeting.
