The Ripon Senior Activity Center has teamed up with an effort to bring a cultural center to Ripon seeking the donation by the Lloyd Mitchell estate to the city. A.J. Olson is behind the Grace and Lloyd Mitchell Plaza and S.D. Mitchell Cultural Center. Olson is a Ripon native who got the idea while filming a documentary in the area last Fall. He says it would be a 103 by 33 foot, two-story log cabin designed to look like the original Mitchell Museum. The Senior Center would be part of it. A private fundraising plan would match the nearly $485,000 gift the Mitchell estate gave to the city. It would be located on Ransom and Blossom Streets behind the American House on land owned by Tom Rogers who is supporting the project. Olson hopes it will preserve the Mitchell’s and the community’s heritage. “What we aim is the Grace and Lloyd Mitchel Plaza and S. D. Mitchell Cultural Center will host, welcome, and serve more than 95 percent of all Ripon households. So we really aim to include the entire community.” Next Tuesday the Ripon Common Council will decide which proposal would best benefit from the gift. The other proposal is a new pavilion for Murray Park, which has a lot of support including the endorsement of the City’s Park and Recreation Committee.
