Jordan Lyles had another effective outing and Eric Thames smashed a three-run homer that snapped a tie and sent the Brewers 4-2 win over the Astros last night. It was Milwaukee’s third win in the last four games to stay within striking distance of a wild card spot and set up a huge weekend series at home with the Cubs. Thames’ blast came in the third inning against Houston’s Zack Greinke. Ryan Braun had tied the game earlier in the inning before Thames hit his 20th homer out of Miller Park. Lyles held Houston to two runs on six hits without walking a batter in 6 1/3 innings as the Brewers improved to 6-1 with Lyles on the mound since they acquired him in a July 29 trade with the Pirates. He was 0-5 with a 10.00 ERA in his final seven starts with Pittsburgh. He is 5-1 with a 2.56 ERA in his first seven starts with Milwaukee. Tuesday marked only the third time since the beginning of August that a Brewers starting pitcher recorded an out in the seventh inning. Lyles accounts for two of those three extended starts. Drew Pomeranz delivered an eighth straight scoreless appearance covering five outs before Josh Hader notched his 28th save in the ninth inning to seal Lyles’ 10th victory.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central Tuesday night, the Cubs beat the Mariners 6-1, the Phillies downed the Reds 6-2, the Cardinals edged the Giants 1-0 and the Marlins nipped the Pirates 5-4. The Cardinals lead the Cubs by three games and the Brewers by seven.
The Packers held their final practice on Tuesday in preparation for the season opener at Chicago Thursday night.
Head coach Matt LaFleur said “It is all mental from here on out It’s about refining and making sure we are working on the details of what we want to do in all three phases.”
There is certainly plenty of excitement for the debut of Matt LaFleur’s offense. And a look a history is a big reason why there are so many immediate expectations. Two years ago, when LaFleur coordinated Sean McVay’s first offense with the Rams, that team came out of the gates red hot, scoring 46 points in the opener. And that team topped 30 points 8 times that year. However, the offense faces one of the league’s best defenses led by Khalil Mack, who dominated the Packers in their two meetings last season.
Green Bay is healthy going into the opener. Cornerbacks Kevin King, Tramon Williams and Ka’dar Hollman saw limited practice time on Tuesday while wide receiver Darius Shepherd did not practice.
In other team news, the Packers have placed TE Jace Sternberger on injured reserve and traded an undisclosed draft pick to the New York Giants for LB B.J. Goodson.
