After nearly two months on the disabled list, Brandon Woodruff returned to the mound for the Brewers and his start was impressive. He pitched two hitless innings while striking out four in the Brewers 3-1 victory over the San Diego Padres, which pulled the Brewers into a tie with the Cubs for the National League’s second Wild Card spot. Milwaukee has won 11 of its last 12 games and 14 of 17.  Lorenzo Cain homered homered leading off the third inning and Mike Moustakas snapped a 1-1 tie leading off the seventh to lead the Brewers offensively.  The Cardinals lead is down to two games over the Cubs and Brewers.  The Nationals lead in the Wild Card race by 1 ½ games over both Chicago and Milwaukee.  Gio Gonzales, who was the scheduled starter, replaced Woodruff in the third inning, throwing two innings and giving up two hits while striking out four. Brent Suter, Matt Albers and Drew Pomeranz finished up with Albers, now 8-5, getting the win and Pomeranz notching his second save. The teams meet again tonight as the Padres send right-hander Dinelson Lamet, who’s 2-5, against fellow righty Adrian Houser, who’s 6-6.  First pitch is at 6:40 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

The Packers are back on the practice field today, getting ready to host the Denver Broncos on Sunday.  Green Bay is off to a 2-0 start while the Broncos are 0-2.  Meanwhile, the Packers have claimed cornerback Tremon Smith off  waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs.  Smith is a second-year player out of Central Arkansas.

The Wisconsin Badgers football program has offered the son of former Green Bay Packer, Donald Driver a football scholarship. Christian Driver plays high school football at Liberty Christian in Texas.  Driver is a four star DB/WR and a sophomore for the Warriors.

Wisconsin and Michigan square off this Saturday in Madison as both teams open their Big 10 season. Wisconsin has won the last 4 games against Michigan at Camp Randall, dating back to 2002, including a 24-10 victory back in 2017. Michigan holds the all-time series edge at 51-15-1. Wisconsin is tied with Penn State at number 13 in the latest AP rankings while the Wolverines are ranked 11th.  Both teams were off last weekend.
