Sports for September 10th

Brewers rookie Trent Grisham got the better of Marlins rookie southpaw Jose Quijada in the seventh inning, ending an eight-pitch at-bat with a two-run triple and then Yasmani Grandal then followed Grisham’s hit with his 26th homer in an 8-3 win over the Marlins.  The 22-year-old outfielder matched a franchise rookie record with a career-high five hits and fell a homer shy of the cycle.  With the victory, the Brewers remained two games behind the Cubs for the second National League Wild Card spot and ahead of the D-backs, who lost to the Mets. There are 19 regular-season contests remaining. It was the desired result after the Brewers held a meeting inside the visitors’ clubhouse prior to taking batting practice on Monday afternoon. The message from manager Craig Counsell and the coaching staff? Understand the challenge of a four-game road set against the rebuilding Marlins following a home series win over the rival Cubs. Milwaukee stepped up to the occasion, in particular Grisham and Lorenzo Cain, who tallied three hits.  Brewers starter Jordan Lyles started and went 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and a run. Matt Albers followed him and pitched two-thirds of an inning and picked up the win to up his record to 6-5.  Marlins starter Robert Dugger went three innings, giving up two runs on four hits and saw his record drop to 0-2.  The teams meet again tonight as Chase Anderson, who’s 6-4, goes against Elieser Hernandez, who’s 3-5.  First pitch is at 6:10 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.

Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Monday, the Cubs pounded the Padres 10-2 and the Reds beat the Giants 6-4.  The Cardinals and the Reds were off.  The Cardinals lead the Cubs by four games and the Brewers by six.

Meanwhile, the Brewers expect shortstop Orlando Arcia back by Wednesday at the latest after his fiancee, Elena, gave birth to twin girls on Sunday. The club did not place Arcia — who left Sunday’s 8-5 win over the Cubs early — on the paternity list and made no move with September roster expansion already in effect.

The Packers are off today before preparations begin on Sunday’s home opener against the Minnesota Vikings.  Both teams won their season openers as Green Bay beat Chicago on the road 10-3 and Minnesota won at home over Atlanta 28-12.

It will be a weekend full of festivities as the Green Bay Packers kick off another season at Lambeau Field. Lots of events are scheduled in Green Bay and Northeast Wisconsin as the week builds toward Sunday’s kickoff against the Minnesota Vikings. Many of the events will pay tribute to former Packers quarterback and coach Bart Starr, who died in May. Rawhide, a home for troubled youth in Waupaca County, which Starr helped found, is hosting activities on Saturday afternoon. Starr’s wife, Cherry, and son Bart Jr., as well as former players, are scheduled to attend. While registration for the event at Rawhide is closed, Starr fans can get a closeup view of two of his unique cars. For the first time in 51 years, the Corvettes Starr earned by winning MVP honors in the first two Super Bowls are on display. They are at The Automobile Gallery in Green Bay; however, they will be moved to Rawhide for the weekend. There are festivities for music fans to get into the football spirit, as well. Country act Big & Rich is scheduled to perform a Kickoff Weekend concert outside Lambeau Field on Saturday night. Live music begins at 5 p.m. Then, on Sunday, fans with tickets to the game will receive a Kickoff Weekend rally towel. The Packers also plan to honor Starr in a halftime ceremony.
