FDL County Seeking Solution To Problem With Riggs Park Splash Pad
Fond du Lac County Parks and Planning Director Sam Tobias says they are going to have to use a chemical method to control the iron content in the water for the splash pad in Riggs Park. He says the water is safe, but the iron content stains the concrete over time. He says they tried using what amounts to a sleeve, but that method only worked for a short time. “So when we initially opened this spring we were in really good shape, but we had no guarantee and we knew this in advance. We had no guarantee that it was going to work and it lasted maybe a month, month and a half and the iron started creeping back in.” He says now they are looking at a chemical treatment process that will remove the iron from the water, which will take time to arrange with the state because they have to drain the water off into a cattail marsh behind the splash pad. Tobias points out the treatment won’t be hazardous to people or the environment.

Change For Oshkosh PD Front Desk Hours
Starting tomorrow the Oshkosh Police Department will no longer be staffing its front desk from 2:30 to 6:30 in the morning. A study last year found only a minimal number of non-emergency calls were being made and few people were walking into the lobby during those hours. Incoming calls to the non-emergency phone number during that time will be redirected to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. In addition a phone in the lobby will ring straight to the Sheriff’s Office for assistance.

Kennedy Half Dollars
If you have a Kennedy half dollar from 1964 it has silver in it, but the U.S. Mint discontinued putting silver in its coins shortly after that. Glenn Wright of the Fond du Lac Coin Club says the half dollars came out the year after the President’s death and proved to be very popular. In fact people were paying more for them than they were worth. “At the time there were people were paying $5 and $10 apiece for these coins even though they were minted by the hundreds of millions. Many were going overseas to collectors, hoarders, speculators and people who just admired Kennedy.” He says these days if you happen to have a Kennedy half dollar from 1964 with silver prices what they are today those half dollars are worth $5 or $6. Wright notes the half dollars are still being made, but not for general circulation. Most of them are for sets being put out by the U.S. Mint.
