The Wisconsin State Patrol arrested a 58-year-old Menasha woman in Winnebago County late Saturday for her sixth operating while intoxicated offense. Carmen Scholl was stopped just before 11:30 pm for speeding. She subsequently failed a field sobriety test.

Sheboygan Police Deal With Man With Weapon At Hospital

Sheboygan Police asked people with appointments at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital Monday afternoon to avoid the area while they dealt with a man with a weapon. He surrendered the weapon and gave himself up. No one was hurt during the incident. Police say the man was experiencing a “mental health crisis” and was evaluated after he was taken into custody.

Homan Auto Group Buys Baird GM

Homan Auto Group recently purchased the Chevrolet Buick and GMC franchises from Baird GM in Ripon. After faithfully serving the Ripon area for nearly 50 years, Lee Baird has decided to retire and was able to work a deal with Homan’s to acquire the dealership. Homan’s is retaining the vast majority of the employees of Baird GM and has added a couple of additional salespeople and a new sales management team. Homan officials say adding the GMC Truck franchise is also a benefit to them. With having the Ford and Chrysler franchises basically next door, they hope to be even more efficient in their operations, give people a wider selection of inventory to choose from, and continue to support the Ripon area community in even more and better ways. The sale took effect August 30th.

Ripon Common Council Preview

The Ripon Common Council tonight will decide if the former American House at 230 Watson Street should come down. Some members of the Council and the Mayor toured the site last month finding it to be in poor shape, which included leaking water and black mold. Mayor Gary Will and Alderperson John Splitt both felt it should come down. The city now owns the former Boca Grande property. The Council will also be asked to allow cruising during the 2nd Annual “Scooping the Loop” event on August 8th of next year. The Council meets at 7 pm this evening in the City Hall Common Council chambers.

Mitchell Donation Decision Tonight

Ripon’s Common Council is down to two choices for the nearly $485,000 from the Lloyd Mitchell estate. The Council is due to make that choice this evening between a proposal for a plaza and cultural center named after the Mitchells and a new pavilion at Murray Park. Both proposals have merit and would benefit the community. A.J. Olson says they will be raising matching funds for the Grace and Lloyd Mitchell Plaza and S.D. Mitchell Cultural Center. “Those funds will be included in a contingency fund that will allow us to operate for the first year without ever having to make a penny to support ourselves as well as a further construction fund and an educational outreach fund.” The Senior Center has thrown in on that proposal. Meanwhile Tom Moniz says the current pavilion at Murray Park is a single use pavilion with a crumbling infrastructure that needs to be fixed. The new two-story pavilion would replace it. The Mitchell gift requires new construction or the purchase of property and perpetual upkeep of the facility or property.

ADVOCAP Programs Reduces Waiting List For Housing For The Homeless

An ADVOCAP official says a state grant for two years for more than $850,000 should allow them to help provide shelter for up to 40 families at a time. The program is for short-term rent subsidy. ADVOCAP serves Fond du Lac, Green Lake, and Winnebago counties. Lu Scheer is the Affordable Housing Director for ADVOCAP.  She says they work with homeless shelters in each of those counties, but Green Lake is without one. “We do have great connections with our parnters in all of the homeless shelters and since Green Lake County does not have a homeless shelter we actually run a motel voucher system over there where people can approach us and indicate their homeless and we can help them by placing them in a motel for a short period of time.” She says at this time they have about 120 single people on their wait list and about 40 families looking for shelter. To find out more about the program call the ADVOCAP office in Fond du Lac County at 920-922-7760, Green Lake County at 920-361-9880 or the Winnebago County Office at 920-426-0150.

Crime Fighting There Is An App For That

The Oshkosh Police Department will be the first department in Wisconsin to use a crime reporting mobile app. The department is partnering with the Relay app on a 6 month trial basis with the anticipated LIVE date on October 1st.  The app will allow Oshkosh residents to report non-emergencies directly to patrol officers in real-time. The information will appear on the officer’s computer screen. Information can be reported as an image or just text information through the app. The Relay app can be downloaded on the Apple App Store and Android Google Play Store for free by visiting relayapp.com.

FDL GOP Chair On Congressional Seats

With two Republicans leaving Congressional seats, it’s going to be a busy time for GOP members vying for those seats. The recent announcements that Sean Duffy and Jim Sensenbrenner would be leaving their seats representing the 7th and 5th Congressional Districts have people scrambling to run for them. Fond du Lac County Republican Party Chairman Rohn Bishop says State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, former State Senator Leah Vukmir, and Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow have all expressed interest. And so has former Governor Scott Walker’s son Matt Walker, which surprises Bishop a little. “I get where he is coming from his point is he wants to have someone from the millennial generation and younger to kind of be a counterbalance to AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who has got quite a following from the New York area.” Meanwhile there will be a special election for Duffy’s seat, which Bishop says will require candidates to announce soon and fundraise as quickly as possible.
