Waupun Man Bound Over For Trial On Charges Stemming For Police Confrontation

The 30-year-old Waupun man who was allegedly drunk and combative when police responded to his home for a call about an injured elderly woman has been bound over for trial. The injured woman, Carol Foreman, was Gregory Spittel’s grandmother who was in the basement and suffered serious head injuries. She died several days later. Spittel is charged in two separate cases, but none of the charges were connected to her death. He was in Fond du Lac County court for a preliminary hearing Friday, which he waived. He’s being held in the County Jail on a $21,000 cash bond.  Police are still investigating Foreman’s death.

ADVOCAP Grant Helps Provide Shelter For The Homeless

ADVOCAP has been awarded a two-year state grant for more than $850,000 to provide funds for transitional shelter for the homeless. ADVOCAP serves Fond du Lac, Green Lake, and Winnebago counties. The program provides rent subsidy to homeless households and those at risk of homelessness. “So persons who are currently living in places not meant for habitation; living in their car, living in a shelter, living in a hotel because it is being paid for by someone else. These are all qualifications in order to be classified as homeless.” Lu Scheer is the Affordable Housing Director for ADVOCAP.  She says ADVOCAP is more successful at working with landlords than someone who has been evicted or is homeless. To find out more about the program call the ADVOCAP office in Fond du Lac County at 920-922-7760, Green Lake County at 920-361-9880 or the Winnebago County Office at 920-426-0150.

Common Issues Facing Schools Across The Country

State Senator Luther Olsen says there are some common issues for school districts across the state and nation. Olsen chairs the Senate’s Education Committee and has served with national committees on education. He says every state has a teacher shortage. He says it’s a problem because you need qualified teachers to teach students. The state lawmaker from Ripon also feels school districts are seeing more students with mental health issues and believes schools and communities have to work together to address that issue. “You can’t teach them if you can’t reach them so really what is happening there is that schools are spending money trying to get folks in to work with those students.” Olsen served nearly 20 years on the Berlin School Board.
