Chlorine Spill Could Have Been Worse
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldscmidt says a chlorine spill at Saputo Cheese in the Town of Alton last Thursday morning could have been much worse. He says it can cause frostbite like condition when it comes into contact with your skin and burns in your lungs when inhaled. Two employees were switching chlorine cylinders when they were exposed to it. “You tend to be overwhelmed and it can be fatal in a significant dose. We are lucky that these employees were able to get away from the release quickly and didn’t have worse effects from it. They still suffered significant effects, but it could have been much worse.” The two employees were taken to Waupun Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. About 125 plant employees were evacuated and because there was a light breeze to the north they evacuated about 10 homes as well.

Ripon’s Public Works Department today will be starting some tree and brush trimming on the Northwestern Trail thru the City. The tree trimming will start near Meade Street and proceed to the area of the library. This is part of an upgrade and maintenance of the trail with Fond du Lac County. Parts of the trail may be closed while work is being done. The County is regrading and resurfacing about 2.4 miles of the trail, which is a $65,000 project. In addition the old wooden bridge over Silver Creek will be replaced with a new one. The cost of the new 100-foot bridge and putting it in place is more than $250,000. About $100,000 of that cost will be covered by a snowmobile trail grant.
RASD Distinguished Alumni Award Winner Humbled By The Honor
The 2019 Ripon Area School District Distinguished Alumni Award winner is humbled by the honor. Jason Mansmith has had a passion for the community and promoting what it has to offer. Part of that is through his role as Ripon Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, but he has also served on committees and non-profits. If you haven’t seen him around the community it’s more than likely you’ve heard his voice on WRPN or covering Ripon Tiger or Ripon College Red Hawk sports. The Ripon High School and UW-Oshkosh graduate says he feels humble knowing the company he is keeping now with past winners of the Distinguished Alumni Award. “Some I know very personally and know well and all those individuals that have been recognized previously I admire tremendously so to be involved in that company is truly an honor and I’m incredibly humbled by that.” In announcing the honor the school district said in a press release that “Jason is a true servant leader.”
