Update:
More details are emerging about a fatal fire in Fond du Lac yesterday at a group home for people with disabilities. Fire Division Chief Troy Haase says four people were living in the home in the 600 block of South Military Road and one was visiting. When firefighters arrived two of the people were outside of the home. The three people that were killed in the blaze were in their bedrooms on the second floor of the home and were unaware of the fire. Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says they will try and figure out why they weren’t alerted to the fire, whether smoke alarms were working and if they were why they didn’t hear them. The bodies were taken to the Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies and identification. Chief O’Leary suspects they died of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is being investigated with the assistance of the state fire marshal’s office. It was the second fatal fire of the year in Fond du Lac.

Three people died in a fire at a group home for people with disabilities in Fond du Lac Thursday morning. Fire Chief Peter O’Leary called it “an unfortunate and awful tragedy.” The blaze was at 613 South Military Road. O’Leary says there was a lot of fire when they arrived at the two-story home. One victim was initially found in an upstairs bedroom and later two more. Two people were able to get out of the home safely. While updating the press O’Leary said there are a lot of questions for instance whether the three couldn’t get out and if smoke detectors weren’t working or they just couldn’t hear them. A number of area fire departments were called in to assist. O’Leary says it looks like the fire started on the front porch and spread from there. The cause is being determined and Fond du Lac Fire investigators are working with the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Justice Division of Criminal Investigation and State Fire Marshal. O’Leary says the people that run the group home have been cooperating with investigators. The fire call came in around 6 am Thursday morning.
