Climate Change Focus Of Talk At Ripon College

RIPON — Climate change will be the focus of a talk presented Monday at Ripon College. The Hon. Claudine Schneider, a Republican representative from Rhode Island, will present the talk beginning at 6 p.m. in Kresge Little Theatre, East Hall. The Center for Politics and the People and Ripon Sustainability are co-sponsoring this event.
Schneider was the first woman elected into the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island and the first Republican representative to serve Rhode Island for more than 40 years. She served five terms in Congress, ranging from 1980 to 1990, and is a leader in climate, energy, environment and ecological economics policies. Some of her accomplishments include leading the adoption of the first Appliance Efficiency Standards, Demand-Side Management Act and Global Warming Prevention Act of 1989.
In 1965, Schneider studied at Rosemont College and University of Barcelona in Spain. In 1969, she received her bachelor’s degree in languages from Windham College. She then graduated from the University of Rhode Island’s School for Community Planning. She moved to Washington D.C. where she was executive director of the national environmental education organization Concern Inc.
After moving back to Rhode Island, she founded the Rhode Island Committee on Energy; became executive director of the Conservation Law Foundation in 1974; led environmental groups and concerned community members in a campaign to stop the construction of a nuclear power plant near them in Charlestown, Rhode Island; and served on the faculty of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
She co-founded the international energy efficiency and renewable energy company, Energia Global, and she was the first executive director of the Solar Alliance, an coalition of 35 of the world’s largest solar manufacturers.
Schneider currently serves on the boards of the Citizens Climate Lobby, Taxpayers for Common Sense, Energy & Environment Study Institute and Citizens for Responsibility & Ethics in Washington.
