Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says his department and eight fire departments responded to the Saputo Cheese plant in Alto for an unintentional chlorine spill shortly after 7:30 Thursday morning. Two Saputo employees were switching chlorine cylinders when they were exposed to the chlorine and had difficulty breathing. They were taken by ambulance to Waupun Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. About 125 other employees were evacuated and the plant was shut down. Johnson Bus Service transported those employees to the Alto Community Center for the duration of the evacuation. In addition residents of about 10 homes near the plant were also evacuated. The Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue HAZMAT team responded to manage the chemical release and ventilate the areas affected by the chlorine. County Highway EE was also closed between County Highways AS and E.
