The Rev Is On His Way

4 August 2019 News

The Reverend Raven’s Big Damn Band are slowly making their way from the west, to perform a Wisconsin-exclusive concert at the historic Thrasher Opera House before heading to a huge festival in Cumberland, BC.  Peyton, the world’s foremost country blues finger-style picker, along with the biggest little band in the country, has pieced together one of the most dedicated followings out there. Come join the converted for his new CD Release concert on August 10 at 7:30 p.m. when the Reverend and his band take to our stage for the very first time!

Peyton, his wife “Washboard” Breezy Peyton, along with the rest of the band, play with all the nuance and percussive power of a New Orleans drum line. Rev and Breezy make their home in rural southern Indiana near the adopted home of bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, among national parks and forests in what began as an artist’s colony. “Most of the people here can both paint a picture and skin a deer,” laughs Breezy.

The Big Damn Band is known for its live shows. Rev. Peyton delivers guitar pyrotechnics the old fashioned way — ten fingers, a 6 string and an amp cranked at full tilt. In the country blues style, he plays the bass with his thumb, while picking the lead with his fingers at the same time. When he lifts the guitar behind his head to play there’s nothing but skill and 16 gauge nickel strings to make the sounds coming out of the speakers.

The Big Damn Band has taken nearly a century of blues songsmanship and crafted a thing all their own, making friends and fans every place they go and there are few places they haven’t been, having performed in 37 countries. There is not a single act out there that sounds like this. This is real, from the heart, handmade music made by people, for the people.

The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band is nominated for 2019 Blues Music Award, “Best Blues Rock Album” for his latest release, Poor Until Payday (2018).  On the nomination, Peyton said, “We are so honored to be nominated for a Blues Foundation, Blues Music Award. I’ve dreamed of being nominated for a BMA practically my whole life. Thanks for noticing this record y’all.” Previous recipients of this award include Tedeschi Trucks Band, Johnny Winter, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

This performance is support by grants from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation.
