With the Brewers’ rotation depleted due to injuries, an off-day on Thursday will help. What will likely help even more is the way Chase Anderson has been pitching and the way the bullpen is stepping up in different spots. He went 5 2/3 innings in Tuesday nights 4-3 win over the Pirates. He gave up two runs on six hits while striking out four. The Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the fifth. After the Pirates tied the game in their half of the sixth, Orlando Arcia hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to put Milwaukee up 3-2. The Brewers tacked on another run in the top of the ninth before the Pirates scored a run in their half. Matt Albers pitched the ninth and despite giving up a run, held on for the save. Jake Faria pitched a scoreless 7th and 8th. Junior Guerra picked up the win to improve to 4-3. Francisco Liriano took the loss in relief and drops to 4-3. Milwaukee’s Yasmani Grandal had two doubles and drove in a run. Lorenzo Cain sustained a bruised left knee after fouling off a pitch and left the game and Christian Yelich had the day off. The teams finish out their three game series tonight as Drew Pomeranz will start for the Brewers against the Pirates Trevor Williams. First pitch is at 6:05 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Tuesday, the A’s pounded the Cubs 11-4, the Reds beat the Angels 8-4 and the Dodgers beat the Cardinals 3-1. The Cubs lead the Cardinals by 2 ½ games and the Brewers by three.
The conclusion of joint practices with the Texans left some, like Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, wanting more. Others, like Aaron Rodgers , are ready to move on. “I’m glad it’s over,” said the Packers quarterback who was frustrated with the limitations on the playbook the past couple days. The Packers host the Texans tomorrow night in their first game of the preseason.
From team president Mark Murphy to former teammates and fans, Jordy Nelson is being praised for being the ultimate Packer both on and off the field. The former Packers wide receiver, who played 10 seasons (2008-17) in Green Bay, signed a one-day contract Tuesday to retire from the NFL in a Packers jersey. He is one of the greatest receivers in Packers history, ranking second in touchdowns and third in receptions. He’s also the only player in Packers history to score 13 or more touchdowns in three separate seasons. At a news conference Tuesday morning, Nelson didn’t read a prepared statement but simply began taking questions from reporters after an introduction by Packers president/CEO Mark Murphy. Nelson said he made the decision to retire with Green Bay “a couple days to a week after I finished playing.” He finished his final season in Oakland. Nelson played in 136 regular-season games with 88 starts during his 10 seasons with Green Bay.
Meanwhile, Nelson announced he will sell t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts, and sweatshirts to celebrate his retirement. A portion of the proceeds from every shirt sold will benefit the Nelson Family Community Foundation.
The Green Bay Packers have claimed RB Keith Ford off of waivers from the
Indianapolis Colts and waived/injured tackle Jason Spriggs. Ford, a 5-foot-10, 219-pound first-year player out of Texas A&M, was originally signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent on May 11, 2018. He spent most of last season on the Bills’ practice squad before being signed to the active roster on Dec. 12, 2018. He played in two games with one start, recording 79 yards on 21 rushes (3.8 avg.) and three receptions for 21 yards (7.0 avg.). Ford was released by the Bills on May 13 and signed with the Colts on July 29. He will wear No. 27 for the Packers.
