Christian Yelich returned to the starting lineup and sparked a late rally, but it wasn’t enough for the Milwaukee Brewers as Marwin Gonzalez hit a three-run home run off of Josh Hader to propel the Minnesota Twins to a come-from-behind 7-5 win. With Milwaukee trailing 4-1 in the seventh inning, Yelich hit an RBI double and scored on Yasmani Grandal’s three-run home run, his 20th of the season. That gave the Brewers a 5-4 lead. But Gonzalez followed in the eighth with his blast, his 14th, to put the Twins ahead to stay. It was the fifth blown save for Hader, an All-Star for the second consecutive year. The left-hander has allowed four home runs in his last six appearances. The pivotal eighth inning started with the Twins putting runners on first and second with no outs before Brewers reliever Drew Pomeranz (2-10) recorded the first out. He was replaced Matt Albers, who struck out the only batter he faced, C.J. Cron. But then Gonzalez hit Hader’s first pitch, a 96 miles-per-hour fastball, over the wall. Yelich had missed five starts due to back stiffness, although he did pinch-hit Sunday, striking out. The reigning NL MVP entered Tuesday leading the NL in batting average and tied with the Angels’ Mike Trout for the major-league lead in home runs with 39. Grandal’s homer also scored Ryan Braun, who reached first when Mitch Garver was called for catcher’s interference. All four runs in the Brewers rally were given up by reliever Ryne Harper, who didn’t record an out in facing four batters in the seventh. Minnesota starter Martín Pérez, who had given up a season-high seven runs in his previous start, managed to leave nine Brewers stranded on base during six innings and gave up only an unearned run. He had allowed 11 home runs in last five starts, but gave up no homers Tuesday. Garver hit his 22nd home run, a two-run shot off Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson. Sergio Romo recorded his second save. The two-game series ends this afternoon with right-hander Kyle Gibson (11-5, 4.24 ERA) starting for the Twins against the Brewers left-hander Gio Gonzales, 2-1. Elsewhere in the N.L. Central on Tuesday, the Phillies beat the Cubs 4-2, Washington downed Cincinnati 3-1, the Pirates over the Angles 10-7 and the Cardinals blanked the Royals 2-0. The Cubs lead the Cardinals by a game and the Brewers by 2 ½.
Aaron Rodgers and many of the other starters on offense and defense did not play against the Houston Texans in the first preseason game, but that won’t be the case against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday. Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur told the media on Tuesday he hopes to play the starters for a full quarter if possible. That will mean Aaron Rodgers and the first team offense will see action for the first time since Family Night on Aug. 2. It will also mark the next step in the much talked about “relationship” between LaFleur and Rodgers.
Meanwhile, Oakland Raiders receiver Antonio Brown has been working with the NFL to find an approved helmet after his previous one was not safe to use this season. Aaron Rodgers has a similar issue. His helmet is not certified by the NFL so he will have to find a new one. Rodgers changed his helmet after suffering multiple concussions in 2010, but the helmet he changed to is no longer certified. After finding out he couldn’t use his previous helmet this season, Brown threatened to retire. Rodgers isn’t that passionate but he understands where Brown is coming from. Rodgers is deciding between a Schutt and a VICIS helmet. The Packers will travel to Baltimore later today and will play the Ravens on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CST. Former University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Seymour High School standout Sandy Cohen III has signed a four-year deal with Israeli professional basketball team, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv according to the team’s website. Cohen went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft but spent time in the summer league with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cohen played nine minutes per game for the Cavs but only made one bucket in three games. After spending his first two years of college eligibility at Marquette, Cohen finished his remaining years at UWGB. He averaged a team high 17.5 points per game while also leading the Phoenix in every major statistical category.
