Zach Davies appeared refreshed Monday in his return from the 10-day injured list. The rest of the Brewers, not so much. Cardinals right-handers Dakota Hudson and Giovanny Gallegos pitched within four outs of a combined no-hitter before Yasmani Grandal doubled down the right-field line with two outs in the eighth inning of Milwaukee’s 3-0 loss at Busch Stadium. Grandal’s double was the only hit in the third loss in the first four games of a six-game road trip. It marked the first time since August 2017 that the Brewers were limited to one hit. Davies did his part after a pregame rainstorm rolled through, holding the Cardinals to a single through four scoreless innings before a leadoff walk in the fifth sparked a two-run rally. Yadier Molina’s hit-and-run single pushed Matt Carpenter to third base for Kolten Wong’s run-scoring fielder’s choice. A sacrifice bunt pushed Wong into scoring position for Dexter Fowler’s bloop RBI single. Davies’ promising return from a 17-day absence with back spasms was suddenly cut short at 75 pitches. Hudson, a 24-year-old rookie who’d allowed 10 runs (nine earned) in eight innings over a pair of starts against Milwaukee this season, carved through the Brewers lineup for 6 2/3 innings while allowing no hits and almost no hard contact. Tonight, Gio Gonzalez, 2-1, goes for the Brewers against Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha, who’s 6-6. First pitch is at 6:45 and the game can be heard on AM1100/98.3FM, WISS.
Elsewhere in the N.L Central on Monday, Washington shut out Pittsburgh 13-0 and the Padres edged the Reds 3-2. The Cardinals lead the Cubs by a half-game and the Brewers are three games back.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers returned to the practice field on Monday after missing the team’s second preseason game and Sunday’s training camp practice with back stiffness. Now the next question is, will Rodgers play on Thursday against the Oakland Raiders in Winnipeg? Rodgers says it’s up to head coach Matt LaFleur. LaFleur said “We’ll see” and reiterated he doesn’t need him to play before the Packers take on the Chicago Bears in week 1. While the Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst, who spoke to the media Monday morning said the plan is for Rodgers to “get him out there Thursday night and we will see about Kansas City; but hopefully that will go well.” Like LaFleur and Gutekunst, Rodgers is okay not playing the preseason due to practice reps he gets when he’s healthy. Rodgers said he doesn’t have a history of back problems but he attributed the varying weather last week which might have caused it to flare up. The Packers play the Oakland Raiders in Winnipeg on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m.
The group that owns the Menominee Nation Arena in Oshkosh has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in federal court. Fox Valley Pro Basketball, Inc., filed the petition Monday. In the document, the company said it has between 100 and 199 creditors, and has between $10 million and $50 million in liabilities. Chapter 11 bankruptcy is used to give a company time to reorganize its debts and come up with a plan to pay them off. For reference, Shopko filed for the same bankruptcy protection as Fox Valley Pro Basketball earlier this year. It’s reorganization plan was rejected in May and the company went out of business. The filing comes as the arena owner is named as a defendant in three separate civil suits in Winnebago County court.
