DNR Warns About Online Hunting And Fishing License Scams

The state’s Department of Natural Resources is warning Wisconsin sportsmen and women about online hunting and fishing license scams. Department officials are aware of at least two websites appearing to offer fishing or hunting licenses. But after you pay a fee you only receive information on how to apply for a license. There are three legitimate ways to get a fishing license; through a DNR Service Center, an independent license sales agent approved by the DNR or through the GoWild website.

Ripon Food Pantry Fills Needs Throughout The Year

The summer long effort by the Traded Treasures Thrift Store and Community Food Pantry in Ripon to provide children with a meal for the weekends is one of just a few charitable efforts the pantry engages in throughout the year.  Director Amy Pollesch says they also support a couple of other non-profits that are involved in a back-to-school back packs effort. In the fall they will provide needy families with what they need for a Thanksgiving meal. “We try to give them all of the things they would need for a Thanksgiving meal from the ham or turkey all the way down to a green bean casserole and all of the fixings for a pie. Then we also do a program in December really targeting the kids.” Their program in December makes sure no kids are going without a Christmas. She says last year they sent out between $12,000 and $15,000 worth of free Christmas presents to families in the Ripon area that were struggling.

Green Lake County Fair Begins Today

The ambassador for the Green Lake County Fair says they really do live up to their billing as “The Best Little Free Fair Around.” Cole Chapman says there are plenty of activities for everyone. “If you look at our livestock and our exhibitors and our 4-H youth members we have the numbers.  Compared to Marquette or Columbia County we are almost double or triple the size of them and we are doing really well.” The carnival midway opens at 5 pm this afternoon, but there is animal judging and shows before that, a magic show, pork dinner, bingo, a tractor/truck pull at 6:30 and more. A brochure with a complete listing of the events at the Green Lake County Fair is available on the county’s website through the UW Extension Service. The Fair runs through Sunday at the Fairgrounds in Green Lake.

Green Lake Hosting National Night Out Celebration

The Green Lake County National Night Out celebration next Tuesday truly is a community effort. Green Lake Police are hosting the event this year at Deacon Mills Park. It’s hosted by a different department each year, but police departments from Berlin, Green Lake, Markesan and Princeton, and the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Department also participate. Green Lake Police Chief Mike Ratter says it is a community police awareness event created in 1984. (“It’s actually to increase the awareness and crime prevention and for those victims of crime and it enables us or helps us to build a partnership with our community and people visiting and living in our community.” There will be games for children, prizes, fire trucks, a bouncy house, a drone demonstration, dunk tank, music, Sheriff’s K9s, ambulances, face painting, squad cars and swat vehicles. Food, soda and water will be available. Hours for the free event are from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday at Deacon Mills Park in Green Lake.

Taste Of FDL Canceled

One of Fond du Lac’s premiere events the Taste of Fond du Lac has been canceled for this year. For the past five years it’s been held on the third Sunday of August at Lakeside Park and in prior years was held at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds in February. Fond du Lac Festivals puts on the event and officials with the organization say it will be brought back next year. They had issues attracting enough restaurants and caterers who have had problems with staffing due to the labor shortage.
