Ripon Compost Center Remediation Approved

Ripon’s Common Council this week approved spending more than $26,500 from contingency funds to pay for the removal of an oil tank and remediation at the city’s compost center. Some of the oil from that tank seeped into the ground over the years. Alderperson Al Schraeder asked if the project would qualify for A Brownfields grant from the state, which is something City Administrator Lori Rich is checking on. Public Works Director Mike Ehrenberg told the Council the vendor for the cleanup project is a vendor the DNR approves of and he doesn’t anticipate any problems with the project. Meanwhile residents will have to take their used oil to O’Reilly’s or another business for disposal. Ehrenberg says they can check back into whether to start up used oil collection again at the compost center after the cleanup is completed. Ehrenberg says the cleanup work has to be completed by the end of September.

NOAA Weather Radio Benefits

The Communications and Emergency Management Director for Fond du Lac County says a NOAA weather radio is still a good investment in your safety when it comes to severe weather. Bobbi Hicken says a lot of people get apps for their smart phone that lets them know when severe weather is approaching, but if it is late at night it won’t wake you like a weather radio when a warning is issued.  “You’re phone app is not going to necessarily go off for a thunderstorm warning, but you’re weather radio will again and like I said you need to take caution and make sure your safe for thunderstorms and tornadoes both.” Hicken notes it is not difficult to find a place that sells NOAA weather radios.
