Ripon Common Council Preview
The Ripon Common Council tonight will discuss what is next for the former American House. Council members and Mayor Gary Will recently toured the property finding it in bad shape with leaking water and black mold. The property at 230 Watson Street at one time was owned by Boca Grande but is now owned by the city. Efforts to find a buyer have been unsuccessful and the council may have to consider tearing it down. The Council will also consider amending the noxious weed ordinance to increase fines for repeat offenses. It will also be asked to allow local bow hunters, known as Team Ripon, to hunt deer within the City Limits. Over the past 12 years the team has harvested 165 of the urban deer including three last year. The Council meets at 7 pm at the City Hall Council Chambers.
Health Official Urges Getting Kids Up To Date On Vaccinations
Kids will be returning to school within the next week and Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller is reminding parents to make sure their children have all the vaccinations they need. She says vaccinations are required for attending some schools unless exceptions are made for personal, medical or religious convictions. She notes it’s a way of protecting children who will now be in larger group settings where the likelihood of contagious illnesses increases. “With more people getting together you have more chance of spreading sickness and again if you vaccinate your children properly you have less of a chance of spreading disease from person to person.” Recently U.S. Health officials reported a measles contagion has spread to 30 states. It has also been reported that a first dose of measles vaccine for children 12 to 15 months old is 93 percent effective and a second dose at 4 to 6 years of age is 97 percent effective at warding off measles.

A little over $10,500 from Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursement funds will be used for the purchase. The board unanimously approved the purchase.
Unpopular Coins
A member of the Fond du Lac Coin Club says not all coin experiments by the U. S. Mint have been successful. Glenn Wright is from Knowles. He says for a while post offices would use dollar coins in their stamp vending machines and Walmart tried them for making change. He says the coins were not popular. “Those coins remain unpopular. The Post Office tried it at one time Walmart passed out dollar coins in change and invariably those coins immediately went right back to the bank and into storage.” Wright says because you don’t see as many in circulation people assume they are rare and worth some money, but that is not the case at all. The Fond du Lac Coin Club held its annual show and convention yesterday in Fond du Lac.
