FDL County Receives Good Annual Audit Report

Fond du Lac County got high marks on its annual financial report this week. Dave Minch of the firm Clifton, Larson, Allen LLP reviewed the 2018 audit report for the board. He said they recommend an unassigned fund balance of 15 to 25 percent and the county fell within that at 19 percent. Minch also told County supervisors this week benchmarks like the working capital for the Highway Department and Harbor Haven were very strong. He noted the highway department has working capital of $3.9 million, which would be the envy of any county. “When we compare Fond du Lac County with other counties we work with, the Highway Department here is operating very, very strongly.” Minch also said the County’s outstanding debt of $59.1 million is well within what is allowed and in the next few years the county will be able to pay off $50 million of that.

Blue Green Algae Still A Threat

Temperatures have cooled a bit, but blue-green algae remains a threat in our waters for both us and our pets.  Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it can be toxic to pets and cause blisters or rashes if it comes into contact with your skin. She recommends washing thoroughly with soap and water if you get any of it on you while you are in the water. She says watch your dog closely if you suspect Blue-Green algae in water. “If you have pets in the water you didn’t have a chance to look at whatever water they swam in it would be a good practice to just give them a good rinse off. They tend to lick their feet; they tend to lick their fur.” She says if you get sick from suspected Blue-Green algae seek medical attention right away. If you suspect you or your pet have been poisoned, but aren’t sure call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. You can also report algae-related illnesses to the state by calling 1-608-266-1120.
